Shotgun Advice

Looking for a new shotgun for deer hunting from a tree stand. I have looked at a few options and really like the Savage 212 Slug Gun. Anyone have this gun or have anything else that I should be looking at?

Edit to add: Any advice on a scope?

Thanks!

If you have a pretty daughter make sure to get the next series up with scope.

I echo the 20 gauge recommendation for slug hunting. You will not regret it. Better accuracy, more than ample knock-down power, lighter gun to carry around, etc.

I use a browning BPS and just have a rifled barrel for deer season, but I haven't gone for a few years so I didn't want a dedicated gun.

I have gone to 20 gauge for all bird hunting too. Got a Weatherby Sa-08 and it is insanely light with little recoil. Thinking about getting a 28 gauge as well. I won't own a 12 gauge ever again.

I have a 12 gauge Benelli that will shoot 3 1/2 inch I use for turkey hunting. Other than that I am 20 gauge all around.

Tree stand during shotgun season? You're doing it wrong.

You're supposed to chase the deer down with your pickup until it can no longer stand, walk up to it and shoot it in the head. Make sure you're trespassing and snip any fences that get in your way. Shoot just to the left, right, or over top any orange you see. Remember safety first. Oh, and don't practice with your firearm. Just get it out the night before season starts and make sure it loads. Other than that all you need is about 10 boxes of ammo. Now that's real shotgun hunting!

Seriously Savage/Stevens are quality guns. I have a savage o/u that has treated me well. I've never shot the 212 though.

As far as a scope - don't go too cheap. You would have gladly spent the extra $75 when a buck steps out towards the end of shooting hours and you can't see through your scope. And you'll be able to spot the hoards of hunters crashing through the woods under your tree stand better.

You're so wrong on that. The preferred way is to have 10 guys in 10 pickup trucks.
