Screwed in Morgantown

Purdy was marked down short at the 41 second mark. Pity that we only managed to run one more play in that amount of time.

After watching all of the supposed bad calls, my thoughts:

* back of the endzone WV touchdown was the probably right call. Left toe taps the ground with possession, and ball doesn't really move after that.
* we got screwed on the delay of game
* we got screwed on Hall's fumble
* Purdy was short of the first down in the final minute. Knee is down with ball short of the sticks.

H

his toes aren’t even close to touching, they are roughly a foot off the ground at the point you might be thinking they touch

I’m beginning to realize the massive differences in aptitude to reason in three dimensional space are responsible for many of these bad reviews. There are reliable tests for that sort of thing and if review officials are not tested for it, they should be.

8:44 to go in the 3rd quarter. ISU up 24-17.

Starts at 5:20 in this video

I'm still flabbergasted by the "catch" in the back of the endzone. It's well documented that his feet never touched down. But he also loses control of the ball when he lands. The ball comes loose from his left hand when hitting the ground which is why he quickly brings his right hand over to it.

Around the 6:12 mark in the quoted video.

just the fact that he comes down with the ball 6-8 feet out of the end zone should tip people off to the fact that his feet were nowhere near the ground in the end zone

The goal line fumble was BS too! He was in for a TD… worst case down at 2” line!

The PI against Johnson on their go ahead drive, wth!

Jake the snake played awesome but dang that D misses Rose, they looked lost with out him. Not sure why we couldn’t adjust to the out routes to the sideline
The out route adjustments are on Heacock and running a 10 to 12 yard cushion.

You think the secondary can play effective bump and run?

You say "bump and run" like it's simply the coverage in and of itself.

My point is if you are blitzing, (for some inexplicable reason) giving cushions that allow receivers to release untouched, AND are consistently getting burned on slants/quick throws during the game you HAVE to change your coverage schemes and allow the blitzers to get there. In the short amount of time I watched (and on film) we had guys getting penetration but the QB was able to make the quick throw time and time again.

Watch these Youtube highlights and focus on the clips in which we blitzed WV (1:16 and 8:51 mark) . In each play our DBs were 6-7 yards off the ball, given the receiver an unabated release. In both cases it was an easy read, throw, and catch because of this coverage. If you are going to blitz you HAVE to have a coverage scheme that gives the guys a chance to get to the QB. That was not done here.

With that said Doege played well (made some great throws), our DBs were terrible (were in position to make plays and failed), and WVs offensive line played well and didn't leave a lot of guys unblocked. It's up to Heacock however, to make certain adjustments based on a particular game and how we are playing. He's obviously been great, but my 2 biggest complaints have been he takes too long to make adjustments (can't wait until halftime every game) soon enough, and that he doesn't mix in some press/bump and run coverage to eliminate the unabated release by the opposition in games that call for it. When you are getting torched on yielding big cushions you can't give such cushions. It's that simple.

Yup.

Like I said above, Heacock needs to have our guys play some press/jams on occasion to at least MAKE the receiver make a play or have the QB's timing disrupted. When a QB is in rhythm and you give 6-8 +yard cushions when they only need 6-10 you are going to get absolutely torched. When Doege needed to get rid of the ball quickly the throw was ALWAYS there. The coverage schemes made it way too easy for him to pick us apart.

Our defense played poorly. They did not lose us the game. The defense made the game tighter than it should have been. The refs flat out decided the outcome. I hate saying that, but in this case it's a fact.

The tv announcers were so bad, I muted it at halftime. That TV crew should never be allowed to do another college football game again... EVER.

The bellyaching about refs on these threads are embarrassing. I know these losses sting- but if we play like we’re supposed to, the refs aren’t a factor.
If you have followed Cyclone football for the last 20 years- you know one thing: never, ever leave the game up to the officials. We’ll lose every time.
The officiating was horrible, but good teams find ways to overcome it. We need to be better- simple as that.

Are we pretending there's not another team out there playing to win? Your posts on this subject are repeatedly silly.

Especially when we're running cover three with our safeties. Heacock makes you prove that you can score with the out route before he will adjust. Frustrating to watch every game.

Of course they’re playing to win. I love our team- but the didn’t play their best, and that was the issue, not the refs.

Plus, I’d love to be a fly on the wall today in the coaches and players’ meetings. Do you think CMC is saying, ‘well guys, we would’ve won Saturday if it weren’t for all those bad calls.’? Or do you think he’s motivating his players, rethinking strategy and prepping for Texas Saturday? My money is on him focusing on our team and not worrying about officiating- losers worry about things they can’t control. Winners go and work on themselves- I know exactly what CMC is focused on. Dude is a winner.

They need to address the soft coverages. You can't run a cushion like that and tackle like we did Saturday.

Personally I hate video replay reviews altogether. Make your crappy calls and let’s keep the game moving. It's getting difficult to cheer for a touchdown because you don’t know what the refs will do.

Sorry but youre being silly again. Of course CMC is not going to talk about officiating to the players. He's going to focus on things that he and the players have some control over.

You just repeatedly seem to be implying that the officiating does not and can not dramatically impact the outcome of a game. It very clearly and factually can and does, and it's not mutually exclusive to a team playing well or poorly.

Im kinda ticked off offense for not recognizing the the defense dropping back into coverage doubling Kolar and X. By the time Brock started taking off running it was midway thru the 4th quarter. This should have been switched to earlier to bring the LBs and safeties up closer to the line so we could throw over the top.

A lot of stuff is there. The receivers can get off the line, sometimes with a straight cross, others with a slant/square in and pick a level that's away from the LBs or safeties in coverage. When the QB is inaccurate, or the offensive line is swiss cheese we often don't get burned but when a game unfolds like it did Saturday you have to adjust your coverage schemes.

Not even that, Manning needs to have more crosses, quick slants, and quick 6-8 yard out routes and give our QB quick throws that can still get yardage. When you watch the film Brock is often pressured before anyone is even out of their break. In other words he has nowhere to throw the ball.

On occasion we run those routes and we we throw them they work. But instead of having a steady diet we do a few then rarely run those routes over several drives. It's either the ******** quick hitches/screens at the line or some 10-15 yard route that's slow developing. No in-between with our play calling.

Meanwhile WVU did what we should have and picked us apart. Manning sucks.
