Under TJ it is not secret there have been multiple 4 minute plus FG droughts or outright scoring droughts. It has plagued this program. The early years you can probably give a pass for it happening as there may not have been the offensive firepower. The good news is it doesn't happen as frequently now. But with this team, it should never happen in my opinion. Tonight we had a freaking 6 minute scoring drought and another one for 3 minutes. 8 minutes of basketball and no points. How do we get out those, or prevent them. I guess one obvious thing is call a time out. I noticed when BYU went into a rut, they called a time out and ran a successful play out of it. Why can't we do the same? Thoughts?

We get into the draughts when we start throwing up 3 pointers and not hitting them and it start to snowball. Like we start pressing to make a shot, which then makes it worse. Look at how many times we left shoots short tonight.
A team as seasoned as ISU is should have a couple of set plays we run when this starts to happen to get an easy basket or get fouled.

Not sure how many times tonight we just plane got out hustled for a rebound, or just assumed we were going to get and stood there looking at each other, while the BYU player went and got the ball.

Our scoring relies on creating turnovers when we don’t do that we tend to struggle. Tonight stinks but a road game at BYU was gonna be tough. Go ass slap Utah Tuesday and then come home against a good tech team and everyone feels ok again.

Eh, it’s a problem, I don’t know what else I’m supposed to say. That he’s never going to adapt? I’m not accusing OP of this, but some people on this site treat Otz and staff like he’s also 70 years old with Kelvin Sampson’s resume under his belt. Todd Golden is objectively an anomaly, Scheyer has more money than God, and Dusty May’s coffers aren’t far behind. That’s it for young guys. Otz is at worst like the 11th best coach in the country, and factoring in financial disadvantage is easily top 10. This is now his second team that actually had the talent for us to say the offense underperforms for stretches. I’m willing to give him more time

Under TJ we lose whenever anything matters. As much as I love TJ, we can’t win anything when things are on the line. This squad can’t make it past the round of 16 and this season looks like a repeat of every year.
Still he is the best coach in ISU history. Were you this critical of Tim Floyd, Larry Eustachy, and Johnny Orr?

Not really. The OP said TJ can't win anything when things are on the line. Coming off the TCU loss with those two home games, things were on the line...

And things weren't on the line tonight? When the committee publicly put us on the #1 seed line? When we controlled our own destiny to a Big 12 championship?

I never said things weren't on the line tonight. Again, the OP said TJ never win wins when things are on the line. That's false.

So fire him?

You are kind of laying out the ultimatem there aren't you?

If TJ always loses when matters and we can't win anything with him what is the point of keeping him.

Wonder if anyone will try to hire him.

it is kind of disappointing that this was so predictable.

Away from Hilton. So much to gain, but not much to lose. When a TJ team has their backs against the wall they always pull through, but when they’re in position to make the fatal strike it’s always a miss.

For some reason this team needs their ass handed to them by a worse team regularly to play to their potential. I think there’s no chance at a deep tournament run due to this.

agree with all your feelings. Given what we know about Otz, it’s just hard for me to think he treats any game as less of a UFC fight to get amped for than any other. So why do the players get pushed around for the first 10:00? I don’t really know, other than Cincinnati and BYU were allowed to be as physical as they wanted. Now, why you don’t punch back is the more specific question
