I also predict that one or 2 OL may leave the program in the spring - and that I think will be really good for the program long term. Total overhaul of the Ol and get anyone out who isn't bought into a new OL philosophy.

Absolutely love this hire.
As for the question about how much of the problem had been coaching vs talent, watch most games with 3-4 man rushes doing stunts. So many plays where our guys just seem to have no idea what they are doing. It isn’t like they are doing it correctly and getting whipped physically. Then watch the second half vs Clemson. Once Miller was settled in they looked great against elite DL talent, including Miller getting left on an island without TE help at LT.
Sure upgrading talent would be great. But these guys are not getting physically whipped all that much. If they consistently look like a confused JV team against a stunt, then the chances the coaching is top notch in other details of OL play and development are pretty small.

I say give Nate double duty with the QBs and hire a special teams coach instead.
It has also been a confidence problem. The players must be confident in their strength first, then secondly in the scheme. There was a severe deficiency in confidence this past season, which led to decision making not happening fast enough (pre & post snap). This was also evident in the lack of discipline, whether getting beat on the snap or causing a procedure penalty. Kagy hire happened first, now with Clanton following one would expect he is confident in the new S&C coach hire or we would not have accepted the position. Very excited on this hire.

I don't care who gets double duty... hiring an actual special teams coordinator should be a top priority now.
My SIL is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about OL play. He believes this 100%. He thinks we have the talent to play winning football. I have challenged him on this, as I feel we may not have the raw athleticism, but he disagrees. I am just a fan.

Agree with this. If Lincoln Riley can be HC/OC/QB coach then Nate should be able to do double duty. I can see benefit from having the OC working with the QB’s everyday. Might even be part of what we’ve been missing. And finally, if it means we get a fully focused ST coordinator then hell yes.
My uni source who played OL for them said it will fit nicely into what we already are trying to do. Zone scheme. Read option and then toss and power. Typical elements of a West coast offense. Lots of 11 personnel.
Take the OC label with a grain of salt. Using titles is a vehicle to get guys more money at the FCS level.
He absolutely had some input but he wasn't the playcaller and didn't have much say in design. UNI was, by far and away, the best offense in The Valley this year and he had a ton to do with it just not in a traditional OC capacity.
And for the one millionth time, Mark grew up a Minnesota fan. He doesn't 'have it out for Iowa State', he's not an Iowa guy. He's your typical extreme Type A that comes off the same way if we're playing Iowa State, Iowa, Air Force, NDSU, Indiana State or Western Illinois.
The last I saw, Nate was listed as OC/WR. What I envision is this:
OC/QB or OC/WR - Nate
WR or QB - Waters
Then for RB or CB, find someone who else has the ST tag on their title. Someone like Atif Austin?
Would love to see Kempt and Payne get jobs, but this a young staff and needs more experience in these remaining spots. Maybe they'll get elevated. Who knows?
