Rutgers 2011 Results

Yeah it's pretty sad that people are saying "the only reason OSU lost was because of that plane crash" Complete ********. I doubt that any of their football players knew any of the coaches of the girls basketball team.

I thought OSU had an equal argument to play in BCS title game as Alabama did, but as soon as I heard the "argument" of the plane crash to justify it, it irked me, and I'm almost glad OSU didn't jump to No. 2 because of that.

For one, it's a real-life sorrow that's tacked onto the result of a sporting event.

Secondly, if that had any effect on the outcome of the game, it must have been a lingering effect, because OSU was up 24-7 and was ready to slam the door.

Third, the idea that Iowa State would have had no chance to win without the outlying tragedy ... this wasn't KU 2011 vs. LSU 2011. It was a significant upset, but hardly unthinkable.

Lastly — and any longtime ISU fan can relate to this — off-field details (and sometimes key player injuries) that seem to favor ISU end up the opposite way. I need not list examples.

OSU for the season averages:

Rushing: 171
Passing: 386
Total Off: 557

OSU stats for the ISU game

Rushing: 60
Passing: 476
Total Off: 536

The stats show that OSU offense did in fact have an off game. They were 21 yds off their average total.

Their defense did perform poorer than average since they allow on avg 446 yds/game and surprisingly ISU gained 568yds. However ISU only scored 24pts in regulation which is in line with what OSU gives up per game, 26 on average.

So it looks like OSU produced close to what they do on average yardage wise against ISU and points allowed on defense.

This is not an "off game." This is a "loss."

Agree, this is why we hate mizzoulander.

I was being sarcastic about being the "off" night since I followed it with that they were off by only 21yds. I also said later the the stats show that it wasn't an "off" night.

Against ISU OSU performed right around their averages for both Off and Def and lost. Looking at the KSU game stats you could say that was really their off game but yet still won. Public perception would say that their heads weren't in the game for ISU but where were their heads against KSU? Against ISU they had -3 TO margin while against KSU they had -2 but they defensively performed worse than their average vs KSU.

OU performed well below their averages offensively and defensively against OSU. Why isn't anyone asking about where their heads are at with the B12 title on the line and BCS game? Because of public perception. ISU is viewed as being bad so if ISU won then OSU had had an off night but the stats showed they did not. ISU won because they made the plays necessary to win down the line and OSU did not.

This will be close. When was the last ISU bowl game that wasn't? (rhetorical) All the one's I've been two have been nail biters since 2000.

Although you said it's rhetorical, I'll make it concrete. ISU has never breezed to a bowl win. The closest thing to it was Insight Bowl, but somehow 27-7 lead wasn't enough of a cushion, and it got close again.

ISU had no reason to lose the '01 Independence Bowl — dominated the entire game, fumbled it away, then had to rely on a FG. Had a positive start in '04 I-Bowl vs. Miami-Ohio, probably should have won by 4 TDs, but won 17-13 ... also had plenty of chances to beat TCU in '05.

ISU might not beat Rutgers, but Cyclones won't outplay RU and lose.

If you read on the Oklahoma State board, they knew that their defense was vulnerable. However, they also recognized that we outplayed them. There was something in the air on that night. Even though we were down 24-7 in the 3rd Q, we all knew that the game wasn't over (and we certainly know what it feels like to be in games that are over in the 3rd Q).

I agree with this. I was waiting for ISU to give up, but it never happened. The stadium was electric. The whole place was on edge, and it was amazing.

I wondered if you could be serious, but must have lost your sarcasm in the volume of data. Nicely played.

My snarkiness didn't come out well there. It was a lot of numbers but I get tired of hearing from people and talking heads about how OSU had an "off" game when the numbers clearly show that they performed right about their average and the only reason why they say that is because they loss to ISU.

People will claim it was luck because of the TO's but they had almost as many against KSU and still won. Also against OU, OSU was had +4 TO margin. How come OSU wasn't lucky against them? Nobody cares to mention that.

Once I read your post carefully, I thought it was an excellent analysis of the facts. As hard as it is to admit, we are becoming a good team. We won this year because we are good. Not always good enough, but by the end of the season, we were a darn good team.
