RTT...20-20 hindsight.

  • Visited Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest.
  • Saw a really inspiring exhibit at the Des Moines Art Center (Firelei Baez).
  • Read "Patriot" by Alexei Navalny. Excellent.
  • Spent a night at the Merrill in Muscatine, had dinner at Maxwell's on the River.
  • ISU beat the Squawks in FB, MBB, WBB, and wrestling. Sweet.
  • Raised 113 pumpkins from just three hills.
  • The chickens we got in August are already laying. Omelets for everyone!
  • Ate at the Iowa Stater. Good drinks, great food, excellent service.
  • Did not have a stroke or get cancer. Always a win.
  • Very much enjoyed On That Note and CF for another year. Thanks to all the perpetrators.

First bullet is a trip I'm planning for July/August. Any high level recommendations on number of days to stay in each? I'm looking at 2 weeks +/- a couple days

Depends on what you're interested in. Enjoyed Vienna ($$$!!! Take a day at Shonbrunn Castle and gardens, stop by and say "hi" to the Lippizaner horses at their stable downtown (really!)) and Budapest the most but Prague is very interesting, especially the old Jewish quarter. Take a boat ride w/ a meal. Was only in Bratislava for a few hours, so one day and night might do ya. Very good food and beer, but don't waste your time visiting the "palace" (looked pretty awful from a distance, and it's not at all old). Don't know how you're planning to get around, but if driving, it's a fun trip between Vienna and Budapest. Stop at all the little towns like Egri (visit the Basilica, even if it's still under renovation, very cool) and Gyor (had the best lunch there, just bought some interesting looking pastries at the Spar grocery store and ate them on a bench on the pedestrian street. Basilica there is cool also (not my photo). Most of all, enjoy it, and don't go with the bucket-list attitude that you might miss something. You won't.

Was this off the Hoarders episode? There was one where the rabbits were EVERYWHERE and when they thought they had them all (after clearing out all the piles of junk), smaller ones still kept coming out from between the walls.

edit: I forgot to mention, the people were amazed the house hadn't burned down, as the rabbits had chewed through wiring in many places inside the walls.

I'd recommend 3 days in in each Prague, Vienna, Budapest. A day is really all that is needed in Bratislava.

Budapest - highly recommend Monuments Park and think it shouldn't be missed. If you weren't going in summer I'd say a bath house too, and obviously a night river cruise.

Bratislava - if a restaurant has it on the menu imperative you order the garlic soup. I enjoyed seeing the iron curtain border that's all of 15 minutes from the City center.

Prague- walk around and climb the tower at Petrin Park. The giant stadium you see from the tower look out hosted the Spartakiad a "mass games" of sorts for the communist USSR.

Taking down the tree and having chicken noodle soup today while the games are on.

Nothing better than having a rotisserie bird for dinner, making homemade stock with the bones/scraps the next day, then making soup with the leftover meat. We do this very frequently during football season.

No idea.
