Reasons for optimism - ISU Bball

Fixed it for you.

I was going to recommend 1974 Pinto with its aluminum engine block, headliner sagging and torn, ripped seats, rusted floorboards, cracked windshield, rusted fenders, broken window cranks, and missing cigarette lighter. But that might still be too nice.

IMHO, the outgoing transfers indicate the level of athlete the prohm brought to Ames aren’t Big 12 talent level and TJ is upgrading and letting the guys know.
Overall Prohm recruited very well, but you can't have a three year gap sandwiched between Hunter and the THT and Haliburton class like he did. Anderson was just a reach, Leech was a huge gamble, Grill, Dubar and Blackwell were just way too raw to be playing in year 1 and would have to really add a lot of polish to be ready to be contributors on a good Big 12 team. Jackson is limited physically. To me Walker had his moments and showed signs that he could be very good player some day, but he's also got a long way to go and needs to develop.

It probably in part signals that TJ knows it is pretty tough to win in the Big 12 by just throwing athletes out there with limited skill, and doesn't seem to fit his style. I know that is contradictory with him recruiting Grill at SDSU and taking him as a transfer at UNLV, but it's important to remember that Grill was a multi-sport guy that had played a fraction of the basketball that the typical recruit has.

When I scan the teams remaining in the tournament I see some like Oregon State, Arkansas, UCLA, USC, and I'll throw in Alabama too.

These are programs that 2 or 3 years ago I don't remember as being good at all, UCLA and Oregon St in particular, same as Arkansas.

It provides me hope that if we can just land 2-3 impact guys that can really score the ball like Tyrese Hunter and two more around him, this ship can get humming and off the rocks soon. Hope TJ can do that, I really really hope we start going back to Indian Hills CC to get guys like dustin hogue again. That place gets some quality talent some years. TJ needs to get back to a fred model of high school, juco, and transfers (prob less transfers now as the top 3 schools get all the good ones anymore)
Prohms not our coach?

I also think he was left with a 2-3 year old Corvette. A Ferrari would be a final four team, we never hit the final four.
I agree with you. I think it is sometimes easy to forget that Prohm was left with a talented roster, but one that was very top heavy and had a huge hole in the sophomore class and very little time to fill his own freshman class with Fred leaving in June.

It was a good situation and Prohm was given enough time to show that it wasn't working out, but that first year had its problems. Losing Naz for the year to injury didn't help either.

Common theme with all those teams is they play hard and play defense. As soon as our coaches demand that, we will win. Even with Fred, we had to outscore teams. Hard to win 2, 3 games in a row against good teams having to outscore them.
Someone please double check my math on this but... ISU is undefeated in games they have outscored their opponent.

Prohm was handed a Ferrari and is leaving a used Ford Taurus. Give TJ a little time to right the ship. I was more concerned that CSP couldn’t retain/develop his own recruits. They would leave and/or fail to develop with few exceptions. I don’t understand why people are already burying Otz. CSP was terrible 3 out of the last 4 years.
Prohm was terrible 6/6 years. The roster was loaded 3/6 years, only 1 of which Prohm can take credit for.
