I still think Yormark is talking to / floating rumors about UConn and Gonzaga for 2 reasons:
1. stalking horses to tighten sphincters in the 4 Corners
2. get people used to the idea of a bigger basketball association in a few years, with a separate tv contract

I would shat myself if UConn and the Zags are added just by themselves at this time. It's just not a feasible event to happen, nor should it be.

Anything that hits the media that appears to be leaked from the Big 12 is 100% strategic. This is Yormark's wheelhouse.

Are you asking about trying to focus on basketball revenue or in adding basketball only schools?

If the former - of course, you grow revenue by trying to separate the contract to some extent. Not sure you're going to be that successful though because the networks are always going to have a max offer. But of course you try.

If the latter - I see a big downside for adding Gonzaga and UConn as basketball only schools. We already have the toughest league by a big margin. With just as many losses to go around as wins, I'm not real eager to add two more semi-blue bloods. While TJ has been able to overcome the headwinds we face, I'd like to feel like we don't lose another rung or two just for the sake of making things even harder.

It would become a little tougher.

But if Big12 expands to 16 teams ISU would only play 3 or 5 teams twice depending on if Big12 stays at 18 game conference schedule or bumps to 20 games.

So even if Big12 adds UConn and Gonzaga- those games would replace a 2nd Baylor or WVU game played today.

Very good point.

In UConn's case, he might be pitching UConn receiving a partial during this contract.

A 50-60% share of the $32M would be an upgrade for UConn and Big12 gets prestige of their MBB &WBB programs. Plus UConn's playoff money could triple being in P5 conference.

If you had 4 or 5 protected rivals, you'd go 3-4 years without playing other conference mates. I understand the rivalry appeal, but it feels like you lose so much in return.
If they go the protected rival route, I doubt it will be as many as 4-5. My guess is it would be 2-3 protected rivalries each, at most.

And keeping the big XII in positive news that they are looking at all options. Sometimes the best defense is a solid offense.

Three would be perfect. Give us OSU, KU, and KSU every year then rotate everyone else.
When does ISU ever get what we want, we are always the ones having to sacrifice for the betterment of the conference. This year we have the crappiest schedule. BYU is our protected BBall rival, um ok?

I'll take it. We get to play them twice. Two very winnable games. Rather play them twice than Houston.
