Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Wouldn't this be the Presidents making/agreeing to this deal?
Probably? It's a good question, IDK. But most of them aren't CPA or CFO either. And they're just looking at money going into the AD, that wouldn't be coming from the general fund, and the AD would be an important voice in the decision making. So IDK how much difference it might or might not make.

Plus 5, 10, 20 years from now - they aren't going to be answerable for it, most of them will be long gone. Just like the AD's that give coaches $20M buyouts...

Good explanation but they still got royally effed by Fox with that BTN requirement which of course is primarily owned by Fox.

We are all well aware that CBS had a sweetheart deal with the SEC. The more relevant comparison now is that CBS would have got far more bang for the buck by engaging with the B12 on their top GOTW to replace the SEC instead of getting effed like they have with Fox and the B10.
I dont feel sorry for them or any media company. Any of them could have stepped up to the big boy table with any conference, ie the B12 and paid more to get first choice and be in the drivers seat on who and what games they sublicense out.

They didnt want to, so they deal with what the got.

They couldn’t have engaged with the B12 because we went to market early and just extended the same contract with FOX and ESPN. CBS and everyone else couldn’t have engaged in any conversations

Yes and no.

If you dont think the B12 put out feelers to everyone before they went ahead and reworked the deal they did, I think you would be mistaken.

While there maybe was no official negotiations, the B12 knew exactly where all the others stood before making that deal. If CBS or anyone else had made signals that they were interested in a deal for substantial money, things would have went differently.

You shop around before you buy anything, sell anything etc. (cars, houses etc.) you may not do any official negotiations on anything, but you know what kind of deals and prices other places offer, before you step up and negotiate with someone. If you arent doing that, you have a great chance of getting ripped off. These conferences are doing the exact same thing. They send out feelers everywhere, they talk to everyone to see what there is for deals and interest, before they step up to the table with anyone.

I am still trying to figure out how you can have a valid GOR extension without a TV contract extension (presumably with Fox) in place (based on reports I’ve read).
They could sign a 100 year GoR if they wanted. Just because it’s normally tied to the media deal timeline, doesn’t mean it has to be. It just means the conference owns their rights. Obviously it’s smarter to know the money tied to it though, and keep extending shorter ones.

B10 TV deal was signed in August 2022. B12 TV deal was signed October 2023 but didn’t expire until 2025 and exclusive negotiation rights weren’t suppose to open until 2024.

Could they have put out “feelers” for the CBS 11am window sure but they wouldn’t have been able to jump the PAC12 then because of the exclusive negotiating window FOX and ESPN not opening up for another year

CBS deal with Fox was done before B12 went to market early IIRC. B12's door was shut with CBS when that happened given their ownership at that time.

Kick the can down the road when it will be somebody else's problem, it's the American way. Moral hazard alert.

These people are talking long before any of the official windows open. Not to mention the sublicense deals with the B10 happened after their main deal went down.

That being said I still dont feel sorry for the likes of CBS etc. They chose to sign on with NBC, whether that happened before or after the B12 official window opened doesnt really matter. They chose to do that rather than signal to the B12 they wanted to work with them etc.

You are too hung up on "official windows" etc. Schools arent allowed to discuss moving with other conferences either before they notify their conference. Yet somehow the deal is completely done before they tell anyone etc.

Schools arent allowed to talk to players before they enter the portal, yet somehow they get offers and deals done before they ever enter the portal and 2 minutes after they enter they already make the move to the new school.

Nothing can be done officially until the so called window opens, but there is a ton of things that are happening in a nonofficial manner long before those official windows open. You dont think Yormark has had discussions with media people all over? Even though the new contract is years away. Of course he his, of course he knows if others have interest, of course he knows how interested those are and roughly what they are interested in paying etc. He knows if it is worth opening the deal up to others or not, whether that is because ESPN is lowballing, or because others have significant interest to make it worth it.

There is no way that these companies are not working behind the scenes with all the conferences long before any deals are officially discussed. CBS got the deal they wanted for what they wanted to pay, whether it was a good deal or not is what it is, they could have negotiated with anyone else, they could have chosen to stick with the SEC, they could have signaled to the B12 that they wanted to work with them, but they instead wanted to pay less for less content, and chose to sublicense with the B1G.

What was CBS supposed to do? Not show college football for a couple years to wait for the Big12?

Oh there are options. From short or 1 year sublicense etc. of one of the conferences. They could have had to play their Mountain west games on CBS more.

Hell they could have continued with the SEC too, they had options. This is also why they try to stagger these deals so both sides are somewhat tied to each other.

Yeah, those are the risks they take, they might end up the odd man out and have to find something else to fill their time slot for a couple years. Im sure they have plenty of infomercials in the can, they could use. They used to have multiple windows, now they are filling only 1 and filling the rest with reruns, soccer, basketball, or whatever else they have.

But these are the issues when you get outbid for a house, you may end up renting a efficiency apartment until you find another house.

That being said I never said they had a bunch of good options, just that there were options and that these people are talking long before anything officially gets worked out.

But those on here saying that CBS got screwed, are kind of off base. CBS got exactly what they wanted. You can go buy a car and find out its a POS too. Thems the breaks. I dont feel sorry for any of these Media companies.

To this point and the 100 above, Yormark is jockeying for position right now for the next deal. If he's not.....he won't be for long.

Curiously, and because I'm the consummate strategist, I almost believe his PE dabbling a while back was to set the B1G up for diving in to it, all the while knowing its inherent dangers. Just some fun thinking.

Very good point.

I love how they're touting CBS when the all CBS bought was 3 FB and MBB games and the league championship games plus a tiny number of FB and MBB games on CBS Sports Net.

USA/Versant is their main media partner and I'll bet it's less than $2M per school from Versant after expenses because the league is producing all of the Versant telecasts. Versant also doesn't have a viable streaming service.

Plus, the PAC 12 has to use “pac 12 enterprises” for the production.
