My favorite toy is a Merlin app on my phone. It does a remarkable job and think it’s quite accurate.

Time to bump the thread .

Was out looking for Long-eared Owls last weekend and saw this Barred Owl instead. Obi-Wan Kenobi was whispering "This is not the owl you are looking for", however, any owl is a good owl to shoot.

Was overcast and almost dusk with failing light so not sharp but still liked the pose and general color.

A couple of days ago the morning bird feeder buzz was interrupted by this interloper. I'm saying it's a sharp-shinned hawk, but could be convinced that it may be a Cooper's hawk.

Not sure you can call this random, but took this pic on a recent trip to New Zealand. Taken in the small town of Tirau, which has turned itself into a tourist attraction by making buildings into sculpture using corrugated metal.

Sleeping Saw-whet Owl so no pretty eyes but these little guys (like 7" tall) are still so cute. Worth the frozen fingers today up here in the northland to grab a couple of images of them (there were two).

The fingers I got frostbitten decades ago (at ISU) were barking at me after I got home. Brrr!

Yesterday's sun was a real treat, but today's light is a real challenge with so much white in the background. Shooting through glass is never ideal, but, man, it's COLD out there. Here are two examples of the extreme differences.

I don't know if this counts as random, and I know this thread skews pretty heavily toward wildlife and landscapes, but I figured I'd share a few photos from the past few weeks of postseason wrestling in Wisconsin (from sectionals, the state individual tourney and the state duals). Postseason wrestling is probably my favorite sport to cover (but **** regular season duals and the 60w bulb spotlights), and I cover the state tournament every year for 10 of Gannett's 11 papers in Wisconsin.

For context, that first photo is from the trophy presentation at the state duals, where one of the teams won their fourth consecutive title.
