I am considering on buying a portable satellite dish for tailgating this year at JT. I do not have satellite at home so I was considering the 'Dish Playmaker'. What suggestions do you all have on certain satellite dishes used for tailgating and any problems you have experienced in the past? Thanks!

I have the dish tailgater with two receivers. Works great for camping; would be equally as great for game day. Bought it brand new through ebay.

We have a DirectTV HD dish that has to be aligned manually (and only one in our group seems to be able to make it work). I would like to upgrade to something that aligns automatically. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've had the Winegard Carryout G2 Automatic for about ten years now. Works well. I use "Satellite Dish Pointer" Ap if I'm around trees that I need to work around. Dish Playmaker is good as well as Winegard's Pathway X2. All of them are automatic.

I like Winegard as they are a very reputable Iowa company. I'll go with the Winegard Pathway X2 when I replace the Carryout.

Anyone tried to go with a 4G hotspot and a streaming service at their tailgate? The cell service is throttled like crazy in the stadium if doing anything other than making a phone call - is it the same in the tailgating lots?

Am I dumb or is it true DirecTv doesnt have a portable HD satellite that automatically finds the signal. Everything I see is either SD or has to be permantly installed in your RV.

I use a hotspot and stream tv when we camp with a firestick and the dish network app. But tailgating is a no go. Hard to keep a call or send a text at times let alone stream video.
You will need an antenna it satilitte dish.

I haven't found one. Hope to call DirecTV this week to inquire. Surely there has to be something.

I use to have a dishnetwork setup with a manually aligned dish. Wasn't that bad to set up, especially if you are using it in a consistent location like tailgating.

I guess I would add that after reading reviews of the tailgater failing frequently I decided to go with the manually alligned optonion at a fifth of the price.

We use an older receiver from Directv and have no problem lining it up. It’s much easier to find one satellite than multiple satellites for HD

If buying an older receiver from Craigslist or eBay get the serial number and make sure you can get a card for it

Last year we had someone stop and ask if we had seen the “satellite guy” . He said there is a guy that will setup your system at each game for a fee. Know nothing more than that about him

We haven't had issues with the tailgater automatically finding signal. Actually works pretty quick and easy.

I’ve investigated the Dish Playmaker Bundle with Wally ($348) and just adding the channels (pay-as-you-go) for September, October & November and turning off the rest of the year.

Has anyone done this? Any feedback or suggestions?

Any streaming options won’t work (I can barely send a text) so I need a satellite solution or nothing.

I used to bring my home dish and receiver, just unhook all the cables and remove the dish off its post in my backyard. Then set up the dish on a PVC base stand I made myself. It was easy to align, since the altitude was the same at my house as in Ames (same latitude). The whole thing took about 10 minutes to take apart, and 10 minutes to set up. I just no longer have dishnetwork anymore (cut cord).

If anyone wants it let me know. It's yours for a decent beer at your tailgate, and I will deliver.

Call the Satellite City guys in Ankeny. We did. They got us hooked up with a King Tailgater. They treated us like we were C-Dubs himself!

I use a wineguard carryout. I have direct tv and just use an older box or you can hook up an SWM switch for all new direct tv boxes ($50 on Amazon) which I have one of those as well. Simply plug in and Satellite will find signal and be up and running in less than 5 minutes. Usually can find a Wineguard on Craigslist for $300 or less.
