Plant people, another tree identification question

Nah, I thought they all had bug bites on them, but then I realized they were all on the opposite end of the stem, so prolly leftover bloom stuff. Like I said before, I wasn't going to eat something I didn't know what it was, but the missus stuck her fingertip in the flesh of one and tasted it, said it was sweet.

if you have any left, go give one a shot. i saw some along the high trestle trail a week ago - they looked just as yours did - as some one suggested - would make a fantastic home made jelly.

Interesting, I didn't know Iowa had wild plums, I need to find some fruit trees to plant in my yard, I wonder if plums would be a good option.

I note that you never actually say that you actually ate one...I'm staring to think you and KC are conspiring to get me to eat something that I'll end up sitting on the pot all night long.

Found this ISU extension article in my searching earlier.

And, I got about 20 seeds drying on my counter, I should have some seedlings next spring, I'm thinking $200 a tree.

:pwink:

I did actually try one, they're not too bad, but I didn't eat the skin, just kind of mushed the pulp out with my tongue. I'd say it's the best tasting plum I've ever had, much more complex than any I've ever bought in the store, and it did have a good citrus note.

Prunus americana is one of my favorite native small trees. They can be ratty looking and messy but I was bummed out when the neighbors cut theirs down. The white flowers are awesomely fragrant in the spring and attracted insects that in turn attracted migrating warblers like the cape may I took pictures of one spring. I do miss that ratty old tree.

Prunus americana: That's going to be my new nickname for KC.
