Penn State dual preview

Going to be a very tough match up. Penn State is looking really good. Only dropped two matches so far and both at 125. Avoiding bonus points at 133 or 174 would be massive
Yea. They looked tough against NC backups and a real bad CMU team. PSU is #1 for a reason but any top 5 team would have looked great against that competition. The quality of opponent they face tonight quadruples. I don’t think this will go as smoothly for PSU tonight like everyone is projecting. It could get ugly if everything goes PSU way but this ISU team hasn’t shown any reason for them not to do well enough to make the score respectable.

Thank you! How does riding time work? Can you get points for that too?
I think you're getting team scoring and match scoring mixed up. What people have already described is team scoring (i.e.- 6 for pin, 5 for tech fall, etc...). Each match earns team points based on that. Match scoring is where the individual gets riding time points, points for take downs, near fall, etc...

Like some, I'm not too concerned about the final team score tonight. Early Santa present would be to see us get 25, 57, 65 (bonus) and 97. But above all else just competing hard at all 10 weights. I know this, Harold Nichols is smiling down from above today!

That Tenold for NC is an Iowa kid, just FYI.

No worries, it is confusing. I never really realized how many rules we have until I tried watching a dual with my non wrestling friends and I had to explain all of the situations. IMO it is a big problem for wrestling, the high barrier for entry because of all of the rules.

Decision - worth 3 pts for team score = wrestler wins by 1-7 pts over opponent

Major Decision - worth 4 pts for team score = wrestler wins by 8-14 pts over opponent

Technical Fall - Worth 5 pts for team score = wrestler wins by 15 pts, match is stopped when scoring margin is >15

Pin - Worth 6 pts for team score = pin occurs when any part of both shoulders or part of both scapulae of either wrestler is held in contact with the mat for one second.
IMO it's not more than any other sport. Think of all the little things with football to someone who doesn't know the game at all.

I can never figure out why wrestling is a dying sport, with difficulty attracting a new crowd.....
In my opinion those comments are minimal in this forum. As a wrestling novice, I have found the wrestling fans on CF very patient and eager to share their expertise. Very much appreciated!

Disagree there. The general idea of football is a simple concept that most are familiar with. Team needs to get ball to a certain spot. Maybe to fully understand the sport, I’d agree football has a ton of little things. But wrestling is much harder for a casual fan to tell who is winning or losing unless it’s clear domination

Scoring take downs can be a bit confusing when both guys are scraping for positions. Stalling can also be a bit confusing as it’s not always called the same match to match.

In order to get 5 points for a T.F. you have to be ahead by 15 or more points and also had back points. Or else it it only worth 4 points.

When did they change it? Sorry. When I was typing I thought they might have changed it.

I'm pedantic, so apologies up front, but no :) (and will be my last on the matter)
Wrestling is one of the simplest sports imaginable. There are only ~5 variables based on two principles: hips and back.

Riding time
Escape
Takedown
Reversal
Near fall/Pin

Then team/dual scoring isn't far off from volleyball or tennis. Where there's match, but then "set" etc.

Maybe you're saying, football is simply "get the ball past that line", but I don't think that takes into account Offense/Defense/Punting/Field goals/Extra points/Downs/Turnovers/Significantly more penalties and rule complexity.

Here’s a link for audio version for tonight if you don’t want to pay for the event

There is a link to Nate Carr's audio broadcast of tonight around here somewhere. I am sure someone will post it. That way we don't have to listen to the bad guys radio people.
