...However, there is one trend in this recruiting class that could cause some concern. Among the 20 players committed, just three come from Pennsylvania. In a 2027 class that is loaded with in-state talent, the Nittany Lions swinging and missing on a majority of the top talent can be worrisome.

Currently, Penn State has more players committed in New Jersey with five than its own state. While no singular team has dominated the state in the 2027 class, it’s allowed some major programs to enter itself into the Pennsylvania ecosystem...

You have a new coach and basically a completely new staff, it's going to take a year or two for them to get out and meet the coaches and players from their region. Don't think for a moment that once Franklin was fired, the other name schools figured that it improved their chances in Penn. and the region to get kids that might have gone to PSU if the coaching change had not occurred. ISU is going to be going through the same thing, which will kill us in the instate recruiting for the next year or two.
If Campbell wins, the recruits will be there, if he doesn't they won't, the same for Rogers.

I know thats all this is for the most part, but its sort of entertaining to see this happening while JFR seems to be doing really well with his recruits so far
I'm not even that hyped up about our own recruiting. Nothing about any recruiting class matters until you see those players actually in a game...but those issues are still amplified by changing staffing. Teams who never change coaches are in for serious culture shock when it finally comes around.

It's less important today than before because of the portal, but recruiting especially the instate kids is very important. If you can't convince the kids from your state to go to your school, why would those outside of your state come? EIU has owned the instate recording year after year, and that needs to change.

I wouldn't go that far. You take what makes sense nearby, and otherwise go where the talent is. There's a reason all those southern schools are consistently stacked with talent year after year, for example: their regional talent base is simply better. There's some hotspots around, but Iowa is not one of them.

For PSU, though, Pennsylvania is close to many other hotspots and has some good talent itself. It's something to pay attention to long term, but not 6 months after changing coaches.

I especially liked the line:

"The losses — if they happen — will definitely hurt the trajectory of the class, and morale around Penn State fans will likely be down."

Skipping over reasonable expectations is the way to go with a new coaching staff.

I wonder how much of it is also MC focusing on guys that fit his culture versus just pure athletic talent. This may be by design but who knows.

You have to get the best players in your state if you are going to win, and it's even more important in a state like Iowa because we produce so few high end players. If you are in the South or Texas, you miss out on one, fine, there are five more just as good, that is not the case here in Iowa.

Honestly that matters a lot more at places like Iowa State. Schools that think they are National Title type teams need 5 stars. They need the culture 5 star players. Getting 3 star culture guys at Penn State is not going to get the job done at that school. It just won't. We can do the culture, 3 star player thing at Iowa State because not one person thinks we have a shot at the National Title. We have a shot at a big 12 title. So if Matt is trying to go for 3 and 2 star guys that fit the culture, he will fail. Those Miami and Bama teams didn't have the great Culture fellas. They had ballers who played a couple year and then got drafted in round 1.

The issue is whether or not that top end player in Iowa is equivalent to the same ranked player in Texas, or more like those other 5 still available there after that. It's not like we are a factory for future NFL players here, the ones we've put into the NFL recently weren't from here for the most part. Again, that's mostly the south and coasts pumping out those dudes. You brought up Iowa, we've won just fine despite not beating them with Iowa crooting. Those Iowa croots haven't gotten them any further than they've gotten us. Every region has a ceiling.

I tend to think basketball is more of a player-sport, where one or two guys can make or break an entire team. That's frequently not the case for football; what provides wins is schematic excellence. You go where you need to go to find players who fit your system on the field, you don't settle for what is close by if you don't need to.

That seems to be at least part of the issue with PSU right now: who are they, a culture team or a Title team? They don't really have the credentials for either right now post-Franklin.

And, again, it's also just the first "full" class for a new staff. Fanbase needs a Snickers for a bit here. From the piece:
And while there is validity to panic from fans, the team is sitting at a top 25 class in the 247Sports composite team rankings and has seven 4-stars committed.

I mean, c'mon fans, seriously?

i for one cant wait for the second time he wastes a timeout in the 3rd quarter trying to get a team to jump offsides, instead of just taking the penalty and punting from the 50 instead of the 45.

Campbell couldn't handle "hot set guy". He's almost 2 months away from even coaching a game and a portion of the fan base is already ragging on him. Good luck with that.
