Football practice is a professional environment? Pretty sure most things said in a practice wouldn't fly in an office setting.
Is a place full of 100+ black kids and staff really the place to spout off the n-word as a fat, old, white guy? Is that really setting a good example?

If it's not an environment of higher expectations, then it sounds to me like Patt shouldn't have chastised the player in the first place. Which is it?
 
If he used that word in today's society in a room with people who may be offended by it he should be shown the door. I'm not even dumb enough to day that at work.
