Just out of 1917. It's great. Truly great. Yet at the same time I was a tad underwhelmed. I went in thinking this was THE war movie that will be so good and ends up winning best picture. Maybe expectations too high. Went in thinking it would be 100/100 score. But I'd give it 85/100...which is still great. One of the best of the year no question but was hoping for more.

I don't see it winning best picture either. Best director and cinematography for sure. I also think Dunkirk was better. Sue me.

Just from the trailers I've seen on TV, it looks like a technological masterpiece. War movies tend to glorify war, rather than portary it for what it is - real-life horror. Perhaps that's the best way to deal with it in the cinema, but I prefer more realistic stories, like Schindler's List or Platoon.

Heroism in war is difficult to understand without actually being in the time. When we see the actual horror of war, be immersed in it, war heroism takes on a whole new meaning.

Sorry, got off on a little tangent there. I'm excited to see 1917.

I’m interested to see the single camera shots in 1917. I think I was one of the only people that didn’t like Dunkirk—-just seemed like it was too much and not enough at the same time.

You're not alone. Maybe it was the expectations I had going in, but I've never quite understood the hype for Dunkirk. I thought it was fine, but not spectacular by any means.

Agreed. I throughly Dunkirk was terrible. The cinematography was brilliant, but it didn’t really give you a story or any characters to care about. Its completely overrated just because of who directed it by his fan boys.

Going tomorrow morning. I'm really excited to see they tell the story over one "uncut" shot. The behind the scenes trailer on YouTube was insane how they handed the camera off in action scenes without cutting. If you haven't seen this video, it's incredible:
