Opening Acts Who Made It Big

In 1988 Gun N Roses opened up for Aerosmith at Hilton. About 3 weeks after the show Sweet Child of Mine was climbing the charts.

In the early 80s the Police were about as big as anyone. The Go Go's kind of an unknown caught a break to be an opener for them. While they were on tour together the Go Go's single Our Lips our Sealed topped the charts.
I was an usher for the GNR show. Some people were jumping from the upper level to get to the concourse level. It was crazy! After they was done, I got to help carry “stuff” off there tour bus and help with security. Witnessed Axl face plant a girl who was in his face and kept yelling “Axl! Axl! He was pretty nonchalant about it. I just gave him a smile. He gave me this smirky grin back at me.

1979ish I saw John Cougar ( aka Mellencamp) as warm up for Kiss at the Barn in Des Moines. He did alright after that.

In the mid 80s I went to a Hank Williams Jr show. Dwight Yoakam was warm up and he KILLED it. I saw Yoakam a year later as the headliner and it was one of the worst concerts I've ever attended.

Tonight's Luke Combs concert has me remembering about the Brantley Gilbert concert at Wells Fargo about 10 years ago. Luke Combs opened that night. It was just him and his acoustic guitar. Now he's sold 60,000 tickets at JTS!

So who have you seen as an opener who hit the bigtime??
Not an opening act, per se, but more of a disappointing substitution for the act I really wanted to see. It was during senior orientation at Iowa State and we were supposed to see B.J. Thomas at Stephens Auditorium, but he canceled at the last minute (this was during his drug days) and they substituted a guy no one had ever heard of. So you can imagine my disappointment.

He had one song out, but he didn't even sing it. The name of the song was Leaving on a Jet Plane by Peter, Paul and Mary, but written by John Denver, who took the stage that night with just an acoustic guitar. So not only did I see John Denver, but I saw him for free, because they refunded the money I had paid to see B.J. Thomas.

Here are the ones I've seen:
P!nk and Sisqo opened for N Sync in 2000
Black Eyed Peas opened up for Justin Timberlake & Christina Aguilera in 2003
New Found Glory opened for Green Day in 2004
Jake Owen opened for Kenny Chesney in 2015

Wife and I went to Kenny Chesney at (then) Wells Fargo Arena in ~2013 and his opener was Kacey Musgraves. Hardly anyone there. "The girl trying to transition from writer to performer."

I was there too, but I only caught part of the Guns N Roses show. I didn't know anything about them. My girlfriend was from Adel, the kids in the smaller towns were up more on that genre of music, I was into the Smiths, Cure, etc.. So along with another couple, we were in the parking lot partying, and finially the girls got mad because we were not in Hilton yet so they took off because they didn't want to miss GNR. My friend and I had more beers to drink and we also smoked a bowl. LOL. We spent most of the time trying to find our seats while Guns N Roses were playing because we were so fked up. Concerts like that were a different thing back then, it was anything goes in the crowd.

No sure if it has already been mentioned, but Taylor Swift was an opening act for Brad Paisley at the 2007 Minnesota State Fair
