But they are and likely have commitments in place before offering. Supposedly, the clearing house has approved everything, except for submissions with errors.

Oh, I know. I was a D-III athlete.
But almost all of us chose the school for the academics over other D-III schools where we could compete. Plenty of kids across all the sports could have competed D-II. In fact, we more than occasionally beat D-II schools in several sports.
However, D-I caliber athletes were few and far between. I can’t think of a single football or basketball player during my time who would have seen playing time at an average FCS school.

What is the athletic department charged for a scholarship? Or is there some NCAA benefit to staying at 85?
Seems like an unnecessary handicap.
Title IX requires equal scholarship opportunities for both men and women and we are not in a position to add a new sport.
I mean...its just more money that we already don't have funded.
And I'm guessing additional football scholarships means more women's scholarships somewhere.
NAIA is a huge step up from D3. Quite a few d1 athletes will drop down to that level. The D2s I knew that were borderline D1 typically were players that had been injured and the uncertainty of recovery held them from D1.
Whatever room, board and tuition is. Approx. $43k per year for an out of state student. So just short of an additional $1M.
The handicap is we can't afford more expenses.
Some of D3 schools use sports to prop up lagging enrollment. The kids bring their Pell Grants, Scholarship, Student Loan, etc. cash to help cover the universities/colleges operating costs.

I’m ignorant of the financials of the athletic department though and hoped the actual cost of a scholarship was pennies on the dollar.
