***Official portal tracker thread***

The issue with moving it back is the academic calendar.
Not if the portal is later in the spring, then it aligns with the academic calendar.

Guys are just deciding to move toward end of second semester instead of first semester.

I'll be curious how much portal activity there is among the CFP final 4. I have a tough time believing kids are going to forego cashing in. But maybe that's the beauty of Jan 2 being meaningless for making deals. Behind the scenes the kids from Miami, Oregon, Indiana, etc. have future deals in place.

Your good ol' Arkansas State guy here. With our former OC now your new QB coach, you may end up with who was our starter the last three years in Jaylon Raynor. He entered the portal.

We are aware. Now how good is he. Until he is on our roster I’m too lazy to look at game film. I only saw our game against you guys

I would love to see their reaction if he ever drops the “it’s never been about wins or championships” line on them.

I’ll play devils advocate with that Campbell speech. He was meaning building up the players and the team so much that winning and the championships would come because of that. The most important thing to him was building the program and the kids is the way I took it at the time.

How do these 2nd and 3rd team ISU players entering the portal think they are going to better themselves, especially if they are underclassmen or haven't proven themselves on the field? If we've lost 40+ players, a lot of them can't have much of a resume to sell themselves on??
I’ve been thinking the same thing. Are they going to be happy if they end up at a G5 school? Or are they not in Roger’s plans? It’s just a lot more transfers than I expected.

I went back and watched the clip too. It was from 2021 and he was asked if they would consider the season successful even though they did not win a big 12 championship.

His answer was (paraphrasing) that he never had a goal of a big 12 championship. His goal is to build men of character and so, in his mind, they had met their goals for season.

It’s all coach speak and I get that. It didn’t bother me at all. My post was tongue-in-cheek. But that quote also got picked up by the national media at the time. I believe Brady Quinn did a whole rant about it on Big Noon Kickoff.

My point is that while we all get he wasn’t talking literally, the pressure cooker and PSU is different and I suspect it would not be viewed in a positive light at all if he said it as the PSU coach.

Yeah, it always seemed weird to me that he got any criticism for that (other places more than here, to be fair). A lot of coaches say things like that, with exactly the same meaning that you talked about.

Otz even said something very similar in the press conference the other night: "As much as we're competitive and we want to win every game, what really matters to me is building men for the future."

We do need true freshmen to build up for the next few years. I doubt many of them will play this year but some of them will develop into stars. Jeff Roberts, the Ames kid, is gonna be really good. Assuming he stays committed.
I think that's the right answer.

Bring in 25ish HS kids each year and hope to create strong coach/player & player/school relationships in hope they develop as players and stick around.

But the other reality is kids are always in the portal to be recruited. Using Manske as an example, even if Campbell stayed, it wouldn't have surprised me if schools like A&M or KSU didn't take another run at him.

Going forward it wouldn't surprise me if Iowa State is successful, that around 25 players enter the portal each season. Losing around 10-15 first/second string guys to more money and 10-15 bottom of roster players because they won't play.

And Jimmy Rogers has a classic quote of…

“Let’s beat the ******* HAWKS!” :eggplant::eggplant::eggplant::p

thats how you know the people making these rankings are clueless, there is absolutely no reason for Kohl to be above Raynor
Is that true? I only watched the ISU game (and no App State).

Just from a stats perspective Kohl seems to have more than held his own.

Wonder if he follows Woods to MSU?

Didn't follow the Hawks close enough to know if he is good.

Probably.

He hasn't been great, but still two years left so still time to improve. One of those situations where you'd rather not have to replace him, but not an impossible task.
