Depends on what leagues are looking for. If football and tv eyeballs are the top of the list we are screwed.

If it's AAU membership and basketball, then sure I like our chances.

And not that it can't change but all of the previous rounds of expansion had everything to do with football and potential tv revenue vs. AAU and basketball.

Yes, but in terms of the Big Ten, they haven't and won't add more schools that aren't AAU status. Nebraska lost theirs yes, but they are getting a fire lit under them to get it back ASAP. They pride themselves on academics so just don't see them ever adding a non-AAU school, but obviously could be wrong. But if that's the case, there are only so many AAU schools that fit the bill: Texas, Kansas, Iowa State. That's it. And Texas ain't happening.
 
I guess when the Big 12 blows up soon, hopefully all the Big 12 teams get taken somewhere. If the Pac 12, Big 10, SEC, and ACC all end up going to 16, at least that leaves 10 openings. No telling if it will work like that though. I just hate that it's all coming to this.
 
Who knows how this works out, or if it ever does. Hard to see it ending well for us though if the Big 12 blows up.

In a normal perfect world we would be in the Big Ten but that ship sailed when the Big 10 Network formed. Big Ten will never happen, makes no sense for them with the way their network is, we add no eyeballs since they already have the state wrapped up. I can't believe I still see people holding out hope for the Big Ten.

Only way I could see us landing somewhere that wouldn't be terrible is if somehow TX, OU and KU could get away from OSU, Tech and KSU. Then UT, OU, KU and ISU are the four most attractive canidates for the PAC 12 to move to 16. In that scenario ISU adds a lot of to the PAC 12 as we could deliver the state of Iowa, AAU membership, a big fan base, basketball and a big football stadium. Only thing we wouldn't bring is good football, which is huge, but in that remote case, I think our positives are pretty hard to ignore. But again, really hard to see any of that happening.

SEC makes zero sense to me, that's a totally different world and we are way to far north, they would just do nothing and would dip more into Texas or just take WV if they felt the need to go to 16.

- The Pac-12 suffers from a late timezone and a 'singular' timezone. The 'midwest' is clearly the most desirable timezone; with the best opportunity to gain views from other timezones.

We WILL see 'changes' which will affect whom is desirable and who is not. It wasn't too long ago, TCU, Baylor, K-State was an automatic win. It 'can' happen again. And ISU, under the proper leadership WILL go up the ladder. So, why would a conference choose destiny based on today's status quo? Much much more to take into consideration.
- For the same arguments people present for not wanting a BYU, Memphis, Colorado State, etc. would be the SAME arguments in any other P5 conference.
- So many of you think poaching the Oklahomas is an easy thing to do. From my perspective it just makes no sense at all. (geography, power, cost, etc).

The 'smart' money is on the B12 not dissolving.

Well maybe I'm not "the norm". I'm not "camera friendly", I don't "wear clothes that fit me", I'm not a "heartbreaker", I haven't had "sex with a woman", I don't know "how that works", I don't "fall in line", I'm not "hygienic", I don't "wipe properly", I lack "style", I don't have "self-esteem", I have no "charisma", I don't "own a toothbrush", I don't "let my scabs heal", I can't "reach all the parts of my body", when I sleep I sweat profusely. But I guess the powers that be will keep signing my pay check until Jack and Jane K. Viewer start to go for the remote so they can get back to commentators who don't "frighten children", who don't "eat their own dandruff", who don't "pop their whiteheads with a compass they used in high school".

Bored has a lot on his ******** political plate, **** Oklahoma too. Iowa State will survive always have always will. Big ten baby.

ISU in the SEC? Yuck. Talk about never, ever winning in football, ever. After a few years, we'll be begging for a 4-win season. Dan McCarney can carve "winningest ISU coach in history" on his gravestone.
 
Also, basketball would be awful. People aren't going to be excited to take on Mississippi State, Auburn, and Vanderbilt in successive games. No one down there really cares about basketball.

All this thread is doing is depressing me :( if our best option is joining the SEC as a permanent bottom-feeder. Why can't we just have the old Big 8?

I'm hoping for a B1G invite if things plummet, but expecting the AAC.

For the sake of argument let's look at the SEC and pretend they add us and Kansas.

They could do two 8-team divisions or four 4-team pods. Probably something like this:

Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas
Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State

Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Vanderbilt
Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina

So imagine a pod system where ISU is playing the teams in its own pod plus the ones in that bottom pod. IMO that's an easier conference schedule than most of the last six seasons of the 10-team Big 12.
 
I don't think that SEC will happen, but most likely division would be:

Iowa State
Missouri
Kansas
Texas A&M
Arkansas
LSU
Mississippi
Mississippi State

While that would be tough in football, it would not be any tougher than what we have today.

For basketball, they would probably do pods for scheduling (not for standings), which would be

Iowa State
Missouri
Kansas
Arkansas (or Texas A&M)

Play each team in the pod twice and the other 12 once for 18 total games. We would also have A&M, Kentucky, Florida. Yes, we would have some of those other teams, but it wouldn't be as bad as you would think.

However, I think that SEC is the least likely of the P4 conferences that ISU ends up in, but I think that ISU does end up in a P4 conference if Big 12 dissolves.

Better the SEC than the AAC. Unfortunately, I'm very nervous when the Big 12 falls apart, that's where we will be.

One thing that may be overlooked in the Big 12 doomsday scenarios is that President Leath has lots of ACC connections, especially in the North Carolina system (UNC/NC State), which is the ACC's equivalent of Texas in the Big 12.

Of course it will depend who is president when the conference is falling apart as that is probably at least six years from starting due to the GOR. But if Leath is at the helm he could at least get ISU's foot in the door to start the conversation with the ACC if that conference is interested in adding two schools.
 
The University Presidents are going to have their say this round. ISU fits way to well into the Big 10 not to be looked at. ISU also has a good loyal fan base that will buy up any new platform games will be on in the future. That should sit well. But who the hell knows.
