***OFFICIAL 2026 WEATHER THREAD***

I was sweating ballz on the rider an hour ago. I wanted to knock it out earlier, but my daughter had a sleepiest and there were 5 last teenagers sleeping in.

Mowed my MIL's yard this morning and trimmed all her bushes. Was nasty hot and humid, but there was cloud cover then, so I survived.

The highest heat index for DM is 122° in 1936, I think that will get beat today.
According to WHO channel 13 weather app, the heat index in Ankeny right now is 120. Turned my thermostat up a few degrees to try to give my AC unit a fighting chance. Also have a large fan blowing up the basement steps to try to help circulate the cooler air from downstairs.

102 in Van Buren County on my station. 140 heat index. At least three other weather stations in the county have 102 or above.

So I was the idiot that painted a porch today. Probably haven’t sweated that much since high school football.

As of an hour ago: A few weak cells have been moving slowly eastward
across northern Iowa this morning in vicinity of the a weak MCV
moving across the area. Within the last 20 minutes, convective
intensity has started to increase somewhat. Given the weak forcing,
it is is not clear whether these storms will mature, but if they do,
4000-5000 J/kg MLCAPE and 45 to 50 knots of effective shear will
support supercells capable of large hail and severe wind gusts.

Looking at the radar there is one cell NW of Waterloo that looks like it could get nasty.
