***OFFICIAL 2026 WEATHER THREAD***

Holy **** I'm shaking right now. Left the game early to try to avoid the storms but I damn near got caught in a tornado on the interstate. Drove directly under a wall cloud and the wind picked up suddenly and I got scared. I pushed through and made it.
And you were afraid you'd miss out. Kind of storm to travel to you

Just got back to the DSM area, driving back from a track meet in Ames. Couldn’t see a damn thing from Ankeny to Pleasant Hill. Just east of Pleasant Hill, no rain and the roads are bone dry. Wild.
Right lane on e14th was washed out this morning south of Guthrie. My sump has been non stop for a few days

I believe it. We got plenty of rain last night, starting about 30 minutes after I posted that about the roads being bone dry south and east of PHill. My sump pump is working a little OT as well, and we live on top of a hill.

I’m interested to see how Friday unfolds. Looking like surface level winds and winds aloft are being forecast in different/cross directions.

Asparagus went from 6" to 24" tall in two days. Rhubarb I could see between the plants two days ago to fully canopied and about a foot tall.
I was going to mow the yard for the first time last Saturday, but it wasn’t that bad, so held off. Now, I think I could bale it.

For central Iowa, when are we thinking things are going to get interesting tomorrow?

I’m trying to play golf tomorrow, and two guys in the group are constantly talking about the weather. One sent over a screenshot from some app that seems to have the meat of the activity happening relatively early, between 1:00 - 5:00. The other guy’s all looks worst after 5:00. I’m obviously liking the 2nd guy’s app better, but maybe that app is garbage.

My app (Weather Underground) has best chances of it between 2-6.

At least golf ball size in north Ames. 1.5"-1.75" and this is after I got home approximately 30 mins after it fell. View attachment 170416
I swear Ames is the hail capital of Iowa. We had our roof and siding replaced after the March '23 storm. The contractor said it was the 3rd time they've done our house in the last 12 years - we bought it in 2020. Talked to some neighbors and they all had similar stories. Have had a handful more hail events since then but none have been large enough to cause damage.

Wait was the Derecho predicted 3-4 days out?
That Derecho wasn't forecast the morning of at least where I was at (NW side of Waukee/ WDM). I got up that morning and checked out my weather app and it said no rain that day so I decided to ride the motorcycle to work. I heard some comments about the radar lighting up 8-9am and looked at it but putting the radar in motion is was going to fall apart as it moved west. An hour later I looked and the thing had blew up and expanded and shortly after the tornado sirens went off. I ran out jumped on the motorcycle and headed for home getting about a mile from home before it started. Was an interesting mile ride after that. I was in very NW Waukee so about 5 miles or so south of where the damage really started but the wind was pretty wild here to. I always drive by a house to and from work where roofers were working on it and had everything removed other than the OSB sheets when that storm hit and we got all that rain. Wonder what sort of damage they got from rain gettting into the attic. Had to be a mess. One of these days I'll stop and ask if I see them out.

Bill Gallus recently gave an interesting lecture about the derecho and discussed why it wasn't forecast ahead of time.

He's introduced about 5min into this:
