This. Happens all the time in the desert and isn't unheard of here either, particularly this time of year. Once you get the plants greening out it becomes harder.
The worst has shifted a bit south luckily, but figured just an FYI for anyone else heading to Chicago tomorrow. Looks like some storms to move through there overnight tonight.
The temperature differences in Chicago are insane. 40s along shore and 80 degrees in Cicero.
Insane amount of lightning in north Ankeny.

I feel the same about the lightning in the Cedar Rapids area just after midnight. Lightning would flash before the prior flash's "glow" went away...it was impressive but I don't recall seeing lightning like that before last night!
I think we got a ~45 minute light and sound show before any rain actually fell. That was crazy and basically went on nonstop between 9 and 12.
It sounded like we got some hail in Urbandale. I'm expecting to have a bunch of drive-by roofers from outside the area begin stopping by saying my roof is damaged and needs replaced. Last hail storm, I had a roof/siding guy from Nebraska give my home a free inspection and put a bunch of marks on my siding where he thought there was damage. He said the marks would wash away, but it took months for them to go away.
