When we say damaging winds, what are we talking here? 60 mph? 70mph? While that’s certainly windy, shingles stay down, some branches could come out, small trees, etc. I guess that is damaging, but I’ve got ptsd from the derecho.

60-80mph damaging winds possible. If it organizes quickly in SW IA and races to the NE as expected a derecho could happen. Some models have some gaps in the line which helps the derecho factor and also not everyone would see the damaging winds. If you live like Hannibal Missouri to Carbondale Illinois best be ready for strong tornadoes today.

SE IA corner could see tornadoes to, as can central IA, but Des Moines/Ames the threat is strong winds. Have your phones charged, batteries for flash lights in case of power outages, and beer on ice!!

Might be a dumb question, but is driving from WDM to Waterloo from approx 3:30-5:30 this afternoon going to be problematic? Better to take 35 to 20 or diagonal?

Sounds like you may be able to go the Mary Poppins route.

I know derecho is the hot word these days but lets remember that part of the definition of a derecho. " a band of storms that have winds of at least 25 m/s (50 kn) along the entire span of the storm front, maintained over a time span of at least six hours."

not all straight line wind events are derechos.

First Moderate Risk in Ames area since Tornado last year. Looks like tornado risk in central Iowa pretty low though.

Saw a bunch of nightcrawlers in the grass early this morning.

Pretty creepy but a good sign. Hopefully we get some good rain tonight and tomorrow to soak in a bit.
