We have church friends who live within blocks of there. They had 1/2 their house ripped off by a tornado in the 80's. Yesterday they were hit again -- less severe, but lost windows, shingles, giant trees, etc.

:(

I know people that basically lost their house twice due to a tornado. Once in 2000 and once in 2008.

Sounds like it was not at full strength when it hit town, which is one silver lining. May keep the rating a little lower as the worst of it was in the countryside?

Wow. That would put it in EF-5 territory.

And would be the first EF-5 in the USA since
If they don't find EF-5 damage indicators, it will not be rated EF-5, regardless of what the DOW recorded.
This. It is important to remember that the EF scale is based on damage. I would like them to include other sources of data such as the DOW in their event report.

Concrete benches north of Harlan blown over at the golf course north of Harlan, Club house ruined trees about 25 to 30% laid over. 50 year old golf course pretty mature trees. Ex Cyclone vollyball star Jess Schaben's parents house got hit 4 miles north of the course as did linebacker Will Mcglaughlins parents farmstead 6 miles north. Yes they are neighbors. Its a bad deal for about 60 homes in Shelby County. No towns in Shelby County took a direct hit.

I was at the aftermath of the August 28, 1990 Plainfield, Illinois F-5 tornado (before E scale). 29 people killed and 350 injured.
Blocks and blocks of only foundations left. The Harlan damage is minor compared to that one.

Not sure what this was or is. Might have to pursue it tomorrow. No wind at this location. It just fell.

This couldn't be pursued today due to rain and it's height in the trees. Debris found nearby included seed delivery receipts that were over 20 years old linked to a dealer in Beebeetown. That's a 20 mile flight according to Google Earth.

I got to observe the aftermath both due west and due north of Harlan today. It's bad and the swath was wide.
