***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Pen is running on fumes. I think the only way to fix it is bring up another starter that can combine with Smyly to throw all nine between the two. Brown still rehabbing so I think it would probably be Wick. They can definitely option Wisdom.
Figured maybe that was why they cut Wesneski short yesterday, but who knows

If I’m watching the game on ESPN Gamecast, I could see why someone would think it was a bad performance by Fulmar. But watching the game on Marquee, it wasn’t a bad inning, it was a **** you from the baseball gods.

He faces 2 of the hottest hitters on the planet right now, walked a guy in which K zone had Ball 4 as Strike 3, then gave up 2 bloop singles. Not a whole lot he could do.m

And it was against his former team whom he was with his entire career, so I’m sure the emotions were high.

The McKinstry single is caught by Beli probably 95 times out of 100. The pitch to Javy was bad.

Three wins in a row and out hit in every game. Betting that has never happened before.

Middle-in sinker on the 1st pitch to a guy with the worst plate discipline in the league:

Hahaha, right? If any team, players, or fans of a team should know this it's the Cubs. Ross played with him and saw his "discipline" first hand.

I couldn't watch the end of the game and have no idea where the catcher was setting up but if it was intentional (throwing close to in the zone with him) that was a really ****** call. I'm guessing he (greatly) missed his spot. It sucks but it happens. Even then the chances of Javy doing anything with that ball are remote. His plate discipline coupled with the year(s) he's been having make it more lucky than anything.

Nothing better than critiquing performances after a win.

Catcher was set up at damn near Javy's knee. It backed up on him and caught the inside of the zone. Was clearly supposed to be more inside.

Anytime the batter swings and is left with a tooth pick in his hands the pitcher did his job.

We can agree to disagree on that one. If you watch the video he clearly missed his spot and I'd almost guarantee if you got his honest answer it wasn't supposed to be over the plate. But hey, they won so who cares.

We were at the I-Cubs games this weekend, Luke Little looked good
Saw him Friday night in relief too. 2 innings no hits 1 walk and 5 K's. Big lefty with some heat on his fastball. Brendon Little was the starter and he too didn't look too bad in 3 innings of work and is another lefty possibility for the pen. Will be interesting what they do for Sept 1 call ups as some of the guys that might be under consideration both position and pitching are not currently on the 40 man roster. I think they currently have 2 open 40 man spots but 1 might go to Boxberger when he comes off the 60 day IL. I'd be fine with DFA Wisdom to both open up another 40 man and roster spot at the same time.

Wisdom has options so they don't even need to DFA him. Agree we are desperate for another arm right now.

Correct he can be optioned however have to account that they likely will activate Boxberger and give him another look if his rehab goes well so he'll take 1 of the 2 40 man spots open right now meaning if you want to call up more than 1 guy not currently on the 40 man someone will have to be DFA to add them. PCA, and Little both are not currently on the 40 man nor are guys like Perlaza who probably won't get a call up but sure has hit well in Iowa to deserve a look. If something were to happen to 1 of our catchers there are no other catchers in the system on the 40 man so calling up Higgins would require a 40 man spot to. Ben Brown is on the 40 man so if he is healthy he may get a look as is Canario.

Brandon Hughes is also on the 60 day IL and could be another bullpen piece that gets a look but like Boxberger right now neither count towards the 40 man right now until they are activated which at that time they either have to be added to the 40 man or DFA. This is why I threw out the possibility that Wisdom could be on the chopping block as a DFA candidate if certain moves need to be made. If they decide he won't be on the playoff roster there is no point keeping him on the 40 man anymore because he should not be tendered a contract in the offseason. If he's on the opening day roster next season then the front office failed to address the 3B situation once again.

True but September roster only expands by 2 players. With a max of 14 pitchers. I'd like to see them add PCA, Brown (if healthy) and Mervis. Which means you could option Wisdom as Mervis has a 40 man spot.

Another possibility I am overlooking is if they think Stroman is done for the year and has no shot at pitching in the playoffs he could be moved to the 60 day IL to open up a spot too.

I'm just under the assumption that down the stretch the bullpen could be a fluid situation with guys potentially coming back like Boxberger and Hughes that will need some appearances to get a read on if they can contribute on a playoff roster or not and could always be an unexpected injury where someone not on the 40 man would need to be called up too. I've been ready to be done with Wisdom even before this season started and definitely after his last couple months of so and that is why I would shed no tears if they were to DFA him in order to add someone to the 40 man or not have to DFA someone else on the 40 man they want to keep in the system so that is why I think if they have a scenario where they need another 40 man spot before the end of the season he's be the likely guy to go.

I don’t know if the game plays out any differently, but I would’ve (and said this in a group chat right when it happened) given Wesneski the ball til he got in trouble then gone to someone else. Putting him in that scenario was fine but taking him out that early when multiple guys in your pen are down and he’s your only long guy was a dumb decision
I wasn't able to watch after the 5th, so I don't know how Wesneski looked. But I was surprised looking at the box score that Ross only left Wesneski in for 2 outs. Seems like a waste to throw him out there and not eat up 2-3 innings. That would definitely be the case if he can't come back tonight.

Unless the Cubs view Smiley & Wesneski as more effective only pitching 1 innning. It would seem most efficient use of bullpen for those two to be 2-3 inning guys to save the whole bullpen: mid-inning guys and closers.

Agree, I would of let him face the bottom third the next inning. McKinstry only lefty of the 3.
