***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

For arguments sake, Assad's starts this year:

4/20 vs. Dodgers, 3 IP, 2 ER on 3 H and 2 BB
8/5 vs. Braves, 3.2 IP, 2 ER on 5 H and 2 BB
8/11 vs. Blue Jays, 7 IP, 1 ER on 4 H and 1 BB

If we see more starts like we did against the Blue Jays, I'm all in on Assad starting over Hendricks. But take the Blue Jays game out of the equation and Assad has been far from someone I'd trust in October.
All for giving Assad a run in the rotation to finish the season out and if he can go 5+ with good results consistently then you weigh the option between him and Hendricks. Assad is pitching well right now but it's been mostly long relief and 3+ inning stints before the start yesterday so its a small sample size. I don't swing hard with my opinions over 1 game or 1 small sample size with any players or this team in general. Some here were ready to DFA Tailion in year 1 of his 4 year contract earlier this year and now he's put together a decent stretch of starts. Wisdom was tearing it up early in the year now he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. Some have been up and down on Morel lately too. Its a 162 game season so can't get too micro with analysis sometimes and have to look macro at the whole body of work.

Decide which position he sucks the least at and give him a million reps there over the winter and hope.
That's 2B and it's taken. Outfield is full.plus adding PCA next year. He sucks at 3rd (Inaccurate throws). 1st will be Mervis and hopefully some Bellinger. So it has to be 3rd but I think they want to resign Candelario.

Honestly, I think the answer is trade a corner OF but if you want Ohtani you need to keep Suzuki. So I guess it's Happ. But that still doesn't open a spot for Morel.

Resigning Bellinger and signing Ohtani relegates Morel to 5th outfielder and probably backup 2B/3B. And worse if we decide to find a solution at 3B.

My guess is if those two are signed, Morel is traded for a 3B or pitching. He's young and cost-controlled, so I'm sure some team will be willing to make a move and we could find something worthwhile to replace him.

Happ got a full no-trade with the extension. I feel like you have to stick Morel at 3rd and just hope if you end up with Ohtani. It's not ideal but that bat might be special.

C Gomes Amaya
1B Mervis
2B Hoerner
3B/ Utl Candelario Madrigal
SS Swanson
LF Happ Suzuki
CF PCA
RF Bellinger and anywhere needed
OF Tauchman
DH Ohtani
Utl Morel

That's really salty. I think they'd rather carry an extra reliever than position guy (Ohtani advantage) so that's one over. I think the solution is trade Happ in the offseason since Canario, Cassie and The Jaguar are all waiting in the wings.

If they were to get Ohtani, I think you have Morel try 1B and let him and Mervis compete for the spot.

I think you have to do everything you can to resign Bellinger. Bellinger and Ohtani drains the budget. Plus signing Ohtani and your one pitch away from losing your best pitcher and best hitter. Need to load up on the bubble wrap.

Love to get Ohtani but I think we'd be better off retaining Bellinger, Stroman, Candelario and add a couple dominate relievers.

Morel vs. Lefties: .210 BA, .279 OBP, .484 SLUG

Tauchman vs. Lefties: .272 BA, .372 OBP, .405 SLUG

I guess I need someone to explain to me the thinking of Morel DHing AND leading off against lefties over Tauchman because it makes zero sense to me, unless it's pure ignorance by whoever makes the lineup.

And we all know what would happen, you are so correct. Morel watches a great strike 2 go by and then whiffs at a terrible off-speed pitch out of the zone. Just a dumb lineup decision, argh.

Why they gave Happ a no trade clause is just baffling especially with all the OF depth in the minors. Usually give stars a full no trade not some run of the mill OF that has struggled with consistency over his career. I thought it was a missed opportunity not trading him at the deadline last year when he was at his peak value probably.
