No more than I wanted him to tell them he was going to sign and force a DNP for half a season.

It happens, but Holden was a bust.

Once again, all hindsight. Cause everyone knew last May that Holden wouldn't really contribute, and Prohm is going to secure a mid year transfer that will impact the team in two years.....

No one is arguing that Holden was a big contributor. Just that, as a coach, you absolutely take that chance. Only thing they were out was a years worth of free tuition from the school.

Good point. We need some 2017 transfers to be announced to we can start arguing about them:cool:

Are you familiar with what bust means?

I would have been fine getting Young ready faster by going with him on Day 1 and Bowie as the backup, which would also allow them to try and get a mid year transfer

Without Holden to practice against every day maybe Young never gets to the level he got. Maybe if Young plays a lot more he hits the freshman wall right at the stretch drive when we needed him the most. I also suspect that if we really did keep the scholarship open and everything turned out exactly the same that you would be on here complaining about not using that scholarship on a graduate transfer post. But that might just be because of how you come across in your posts (always complaining) and not how you really are.

Tying this argument back into 17 transfers, I would say there's a bit more pressure on Prohm this spring to find an impactful grad transfer to help next year in the front court. But it does help that he has more time this year.

I don't even care what definition you use. Even if I were to agree that he was a bust, I would still 100% support Prohm for going after him last May.
I have a feeling you would have been pretty disappointed if Prohm passed on a 6'9 big, with serviceable numbers, and opted to have an open scholarship. Especially considering, there were already 5 available for the next year.

Agree 100%. Last year the Malou and Lard stuff kinda put them in a desperate position and, without doing research, I think this 2017 transfer pool is already better than last year.

The staff knows what they'll need for 2017-18 and beyond so i'm expecting some solid additions this spring having 4 scholarships to work with.

Holden entered the season as the starter over Bowie and Young. So yes, he was worth the scholarship.

This is a stupid argument, because there's guys who played less than him. And we were supposed to have Lard and Malou. And there literally isn't one single program who hits 100% on recruiting.

Definitely. He was a 6'8" guy with a huge wingspan and some experience. I think we all expected him, at the least, to give us 4 and 3 like Solomon did. He showed up and was pretty immobile. Kind of makes you realize how hard it is to find a good big man. Hoiberg used to talk about how Ejim was fast rim to rim and I didn't realize how much that helped spacing on the secondary fast breaks

This offseason they have the benefit of having Solomon so they have a lot more flexibility when it comes to looking at transfers.

A) Solomon had a broken hand for most of the 1st half, ISU would've been very short handed without an extra big man and people would've lit Prohm on fire if Holden wasn't here.

B)One example in my mind is the Oklahoma game in Norman. I don't think ISU wins that without Merrill.

Can we now move on to actual transfer discussion??

Hoping with the tourney over, and the dead period ending here within a couple of days that we start to see some of these transfers come off the board. This way the thread can get back on topic and not talk about Holden and what could of been, or how Young should have started from day 1 so Bowie could have been a better backup. Or how Georgetown hired Pat Ewing.

Agree. Holden was more or less a bust, Kasongo TBD but not hopeful and Bowie was serviceable but not as good as many expected. Moving forward, I think the staff is going to be targetting players that have put up solid numbers a high major or gaudy numbers at a mid major.
I'm excited to see how this new "pursuing better players" strategy works for the staff. I hope other teams don't get wind of it.

He got enough of that as it was.
