***OFFICAL: I BOOKED MY TRIP THREAD***

We've got five going - me/wife from Oregon, daughter in TX, and daughter/guyfriend from Ames - into EWR (us) and LGA (kids). Picked up two rooms at LaQuinta Brooklyn Downtown for $199/night, and just four blocks from the MTA station, a short jump to south Manhattan.

Planning to do the week-long subway pass for $29/ea and should pay for itself. Otherwise, the only pickle still in the works is ground-transportation to/from airports.

Still waiting to hear what ISUAA and/or CGC are doing for pep-rallies and pre-game tailgaters...

Long time lurker too. Wife and I are flying into Newark and staying at the Hilton Penn Station. I picked the hotel based upon it being linked to the train station to hopefully make it easier to make the transit connections. We'll see. I'm sure it will be an adventure one way or another.

Flying in on Tuesday. Going to try and hit a show Wed or Thur night. Fly out Sat afternoon.

This will be a classic Manhattan experience. The train goes right to Penn Station. And you can connect to anything from Penn Station. And have plenty to do right around the hotel.

The wife and I are driving, arriving Dec 28th, heading back on the 31st. Staying at Fairfield Inn East Rutherford Meadowlands, got it direct from Marriott.com for $114 a night (refundable in case of weather travel issues), which includes 2 R/T bus tickets per day for NJ Transit stop right next to hotel, which takes us into Port Authority Bus Terminal.

We lived in DC from 2005-2009 and took a number of trips up to NYC. Definitely concur with other posters who are saving some money by staying in Secaucus/East Rutherford. Generally free parking around the hotels, and the NJ Transit buses into Port Authority are comfortable and reasonably quick. Looks like the last return trip from Manhattan for bus 163 leaves at 1:20AM each night, so that should give us plenty of time to enjoy the night sights.

This may be an obvious idea, but don't forget about the Broadway and off-Broadway musicals and plays if you're into that sort of thing. On our last trip there we stopped at the Times Square TKTS booth that sells day-of-show tickets, looked at the list of shows and somewhat randomly decided to see Rock of Ages at an off-Broadway theatre for a reasonable price, it was a good time. This time it may be tempting to see if there's anything reasonable available for Book of Mormon (the musical by the South Park guys), though that's probably still popular, especially this time of year.

We also took a tour of Ellis Island, which was really interesting. I think someone else in this thread recommended it over Statue of Liberty, and I would agree if you only have time for one of those two.

Finally, one thing not to do: "skating" on fake ice made of plastic. When we last visited a few years ago, the American Museum of Natural History had an outdoor skating rink that was a lot cheaper than the famous Rockefeller Plaza rink, so we decided to try it out. It was designed to be an eco-friendly rink that used no water and instead had a synthetic surface that was supposed to be a suitable substitute. Definitely a case of getting what you pay for, however, as it was impossible to skate on compared to real ice. I'm no Dorothy Hamill, but I can generally stay upright on ice skates. That rink was no fun and a waste of money.

Go Clones!

If I fly into White Plains, NY what is the best cheap way to get to Clifton, NJ where I can stay with friends for several days? I know, flying into Newark makes more sense, but I have other things to do up there. So, how do I get from White Plains to Clifton (or nearby)?

Or how do I get from White Plains to Yankee Stadium on game day? Is it just part of the normal train system? If so, that will be perfect for me.

I answered your second question by PM. As to getting to Clifton, take Metro-North from White Plains into Grand Central Station. Then you need to get across town - it's about a mile walk, taking the S train at Grand Central cuts that significantly - and catch the New Jersey Transit Main & Bergen Line to Clifton at Penn Station.

Note to Cyclones still looking for options. Flying into White Plains, NY (north of the Bronx) seems like it is going to work for us (still had a United Saver seat from Chicago available). Probably a little less scary for Iowans who are leery of landing right in the big city (not me!).

We have our flight tripped. My parents and sister! So excited! I have New York, New York by Frank Sinatra, Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, and New York State of Mind by Billy Joel on repeat on my Ipod.

Someone asked about pep rallys and the like? When will we find out about these? We went to the one in Tempe and it was a blast. I'm also interested in knowing when the team will ring the opening bell of the NYSE?? The market will surely skky rocket that day.

Is anybody on here looking for an extra roommate in NYC? None of my friends/fraternity brothers are going and considering that I live in Louisiana now, it's been difficult to find a group.

Well from White Plains to Clifton you'd take the Metro North to Penn Station then hop on the NJTransit "Main Line" to Clifton. To get to Yankee Stadium you take the same Metro North to The Bronx then have to switch over to a 4 Train. I gotta figure out which one for you.

Thanks. Now that I look at things, we will probably just stay in White Plains and take the train to the game and downtown for fun.

Google Maps can do public transit if you tell it that's how you want to travel. Put in your start and stop locations and what time you'll be starting and it'll pop out what busses/subways to take, when you have to walk between stations, and all that.

ANyone ever done the NYE cruise around Manhattan? Worth the 140 bucks?

Well, slight hedge. I've done a birthday party cruise around Manhattan, and I've done a NYE cruise around Boston Harbor. Based on those two experiences, I can say...fun, but not worth $140. Does that include anything? Booze?
