***OFFICAL: I BOOKED MY TRIP THREAD***

Man....planning these bowl trips is hard on the fly. And I didn't even do much of our planning.
.
But I think we are official. Flying out of Minneapolis on the 28th. Flying back on the 1st. Hoping for good weather. Will do the land only package with the gridiron club. By putting 4 in a room, your cost per person isn't crazy high. And that gets us a hotel in Manhattan. I've never been there before and I think it will be nice being right where we want to visit places.

just bought 4 tickets, booked room at Embassy Suites in Secaucus per recommendations. Will be driving in.

Looking at a hotel with a nonrefundable rate. Is it possible to buy trip insurance if we can't get to hotel - weather, family emergency? Where do I look?

Booked the alumni assoc. package a couple days ago. Just got word today not enough signed up to do the charter, so they are switching the package to commercial flights.

Do yourself a BIG favor:

Don't assume that the 14 miles will take you the 24-minutes that you're told on Google Maps! Can you, after rush hour, make it that fast? Absolutely! Will you? Most likely not. Keep your eye on traffic reports, and closely on all the signs leading up to the George Washington Bridge, then as you are coming across, the signs for The Major Deegan Expressway OR Girard Avenue (depending on which way you choose to exit towards the stadium).

In other words: if you're planning to meet people at 11, leave by 10, play it safe. Or safer and leave by 9:30 lol!!

Thanks! In this case I will be going to Secaucus after the game. Will be driving from Hersey, PA before game in the morning.

A little thing called the internet came out since I lived there, but one thing I would suggest is that people actually buy a NYC map. I'm not sure whether this is stating the obvious anymore, or not. Maybe it depends on your needs.

But you can carry it with and write on, and of course it will contain a lot of information. It would also help interpret and make sense of all the amazing personalized travel information in this thread. Thanks visiting Rutgers fans!!

Manhattan is on a pretty simple grid system so it is actually pretty easy to figure out (ways to get around a little more complex).

Wear comfortable shoes.

Although I saw a lot of the city on foot and never had any problem, of course be aware of possible cons, that that is what some people do and look for. On the train out of Grand Central one evening a girl went from car to car with a sad story of how she was a college student who was robbed or whatever and needed train fare to get back home. Literally everyone was silent and ignored her. When my companions from out of town and I discussed this after she moved on, a nice lady sitting across the way overheard our conversation and said that the girl is a regular, that she has the same story every Sunday.

There is a story right now in the NY Times about sleeping on the subway (not recommended). I don't want to spoil anyone's adventure and surprise ...... but a little incidental information here in case anyone is interested:

To Sleep on the Subway, Maybe, but to Dream?
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/08/n...ubway-maybe-but-to-dream-poor-chance.html?hp#
A ride on a New York subway can be a sensory overload: sometimes musicians perform for change; conductors plead to those who hold open train doors to relent; and passengers, often in unimaginably close proximity, subject one another to all sorts of sights, sounds, smells and touches, preferably inadvertent. . . .

People outside of New York may wonder how in a city that never sleeps, so many New Yorkers manage to doze on the subway. There is no law against it, but those who take subway catnaps do so at their own risk; a recent Metropolitan Transportation Authority committee meeting featured a presentation on how criminals seeking iPhones slice open the pockets of dozing passengers. ...

Word of caution in regards to the George Washington Bridge. If you cross it from New Jersey into New York there is a toll. Last time I was there about 1 1/2 years ago it was $12. Also you have to be on the upper level if you are paying cash and it can be very confusing as the traffic on that bridge can be pretty congested.

Cassie's in Englewood is a nice place for dinner. Just a short drive north of Fort Lee.

Thanks for the info about the toll! We will have to check out Cassies thanks for the recommendation!

I'm booked, with two others fly out of CR on the 27th return 31st. Hotel in Manhattan right between Gridiron club and Alumni hotels.

Never been to a Bowl game hope to go to a pep rally or two. How do those things work? do they cost money, do u have to reserve a spot?

A lot of people are staying near Laguardia. Is it easy to get to the city from this location. My wife and I are planning on going to time square for new years. It will be the only time we will probably do this in our lives. Will we be able to get back to Laguardia without using a cab at 1 am (or whatever time after midnight) on new years day?

If I fly into White Plains, NY what is the best cheap way to get to Clifton, NJ where I can stay with friends for several days? I know, flying into Newark makes more sense, but I have other things to do up there. So, how do I get from White Plains to Clifton (or nearby)?

Or how do I get from White Plains to Yankee Stadium on game day? Is it just part of the normal train system? If so, that will be perfect for me.
