January 4th, 2019, Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan
Pre-Show: 1 AM Central, Main Show Start: 2 AM Central
Available through NJPW World, FITE, and AXS TV (tape delayed)
Commentators: Kevin Kelly and Don Callis

I know this was stated in the Royal Rumble thread, but I figured that I would spam it with posts about this event since I plan on watching it live, so I'm creating this thread. Link provided shows the entire match card for the event: https://www.njpw1972.com/tornament/34780?showCards=1

I plan on doing a full breakdown of the card later, giving the low down on storylines surrounding the matches and making match predictions. I will also give my recommendation for the preferred method of watching this event.

Since I have some time, I'll start with some fun facts about the history of this event and what this year has in store.
- Wrestle Kingdom is the annual January 4th show NJPW runs from the Tokyo Dome and is their equivalent of WrestleMania. This event started in 1992 and has used different names before settling on the Wrestle Kingdom name, therefore this is the 28th straight show NJPW has run on January 4th at Dave Meltzer's favorite place in the whole wide world (only exception would be American Legion Post 308).
- Out of the 10 matches on the card (including pre-show), 8 of them are title bouts, including one that involves a different promotion. The card contains seven singles matches, two triple threats, and a five-team gauntlet match.
- Out of the 41 wrestlers set to participate, 21 are of Japanese origin while the other 20 are foreigners. Out of the 20, 9 are American, 4 are Canadians, 3 Brits, 2 Tongans, and 1 New Zealander and Irishman apiece.
- Of the three (legal) viewing options available, AXS is probably the best option. The tape delay consists of original commentary from the NJPW World and will be shown in 2 hour blocks on January 4th, 11th, and 18th. NJPW World is great if you're willing to dive into the product full time as it costs less than $9 a month. If you do this, subscribe after January 1st since they bill on the 1st of the month regardless of start date and cancel at the end of the month. FITE TV is the worst option since the base price is $35.

PRE-SHOW - NO.1 CONTENDER GAUNTLET MATCH FOR NEVER OPENWEIGHT 6-MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
(MAKABE, YANO, TAGUCHI) VS. (FINLAY, COBB, NAGATA) VS. (TAYLOR, BERETTA, GOTO) VS. (SCURLL, PAGE, Y. TAKAHASHI) VS. (SUZUKI, ARCHER, SMITH JR.)
gant1.jpg

- Assumption is that winner will challenge for the 6-man titles held by Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, and Taiji Ishimori the next night at New Year's Dash, the equivalent of the Raw after WrestleMania. Not much storyline for this match except for Toru Yano (middle) teaming up with long-time rival Togi Makabe (left) after Makabe saved Yano from a beatdown from Bullet Club. There is a really deep backstory between the two, and this video explains it very well:
There are two feasible options, and I would like to see Suzuki-Gun win, but I expect Yano to pick up the deciding fall from his signature roll-up.
PREDICTION: Winners are Makabe, Yano, and Taguchi.

1ST MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - NEVER OPENWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
KOTA IBUSHI (CHAMPION) VS. WILL OSPREAY (CHALLENGER)
WK13_never.jpg

- The match that I'm most excited about. Very high chance that this will be the best match of the night and possible MOTY candidate at the end of 2019 as long as they take care of their necks. Expect a stupendously fast-paced and high flying match. Backstory is that during September, Ospreay made clear that his wish was to wrestle against Ibushi, who was initially apprehensive. The stars aligned at the World Tag League Final when Ibushi won the title and Ospreay winning the number one contender's match. This will be a 20+ minute match that probably will get past 5 stars from Meltzer. Here is a little taste of what's in store:
PREDICTION: Ibushi defeats Ospreay with the Kamigoye and retains the NEVER title.

2ND MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - IWGP Jr. TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
YOSHINOBU KANEMARU & EL DESPERADO (CHAMPIONS) VS. ROPPONGI 3K - YOH & SHO (CHALLENGERS) VS. BUSHI & SHINGO TAKAGI (CHALLENGERS)
JrTag_3way.jpg

- The IWGP Jr. Tag title match is traditionally the opening match at the big shows, but is not the case this time around. Some contrasting elements in the match as the champions use lots of heel tactics, such as spitting whiskey at opponents, using low blows, and distracting referees. Takagi and Sho bring the power for their teams while Bushi and Yoh bring the speed and high-flying. This matchup is a toss-up and I won't be surprised by any of these teams walking out as champions at the end of the night. Video here provides the backstory to the match:
PREDICTION: Kanemaru and Desperado retain using signature heel tactics.

3RD MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - BRITISH HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
TOMOHIRO ISHII (CHAMPION) VS. ZACK SABRE JR. (CHALLENGER)
WK13_BritishHeavy.jpg

- Very interesting matchup here considering that this is the first time a RevPro title is being defended at Wrestle Kingdom and the way these two guys wrestle. Ishii is a classic Japanese strong-style wrestler while ZSJ has a PhD in the technical style. Sabre also has a great heater in Taka Michinoku. Short little video about the match is right here:
PREDICTION: Sabre wins via submission and is the new RPW Champion.

4TH MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - IWGP TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
GUERILLAS OF DESTINY - TAMA TONGA & TANGA LOA (CHAMPIONS) VS. EVIL & SANADA (CHALLENGERS) VS. THE YOUNG BUCKS - MATT & NICK JACKSON (CHALLENGERS)
WK13_tag3way.jpg

- This match is going to be a microcosm of my two main questions about this event, which are:
1. Will Western talent still be pushed by NJPW so that they continue their agenda of increased recognition among wrestling fans in the US?
2. How will Bullet Club fare after being altered and, in turn, so dominant in the buildup to the event?
- Another topic of discussion is the inclusion of the Bucks in this match. There has been some criticism about their place in the match, which will be explained here. Back in June at Dominion, they won the IWGP Heavyweight tag straps against Evil and Sanada after moving up to heavyweight earlier in the year. They successfully defended against the same LIJ pair a month later. During the Bullet Club implosion angle, the Bucks lost to GOD in September. Within the past month, LIJ and GOD have traded wins against each other during the World Tag League tourney, with the former pair winning against the latter to win the tourney. After the match, the Bucks came down and stated that they haven't used their rematch yet, even though that's not really a thing in NJPW, and will do so at the Dome. The fact that the Bucks didn't work the month-long tour until the final show and the other two teams did makes things a little awkward as well. Here's a video showing how it went down:
- With the Bucks and their Elite buddies starting their own promotion called AEW, they will most likely take the fall in the match. I think between the other two teams, it would make sense that the champs retain, and I trust the NJPW bookers to do just that.
PREDICTION: GOD wins by pinfall and retains their titles.

5TH MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - IWGP US HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
CODY (CHAMPION) VS. JUICE ROBINSON (CHALLENGER)
WK13_US.jpg

- Like the Young Bucks, Cody has had a lackluster title reign due to not being around. The one bugaboo that NJPW has had this year is that the the Western wrestlers around the title pictures (Bucks, Cody, Jericho, and Omega to a lesser extent) have not been around a lot, which has hurt the quality of the product. Also add in the fact that none of them are typical Japanese style pro wrestlers and they stand out in more ways than one. Juice is an excellent underdog babyface that cuts great promos and is NOT a knockoff Macho Man, contrary to picture above. The first two minutes of this video are proof of it. Cody is in his element when he plays a stuck-up heel.
- This storyline started when Cody pinned Juice, the US champ at the time, in a tag match at the end of the G1, making him the number one contender. At the end of September, Cody beat Juice to win the title. Cody has not made any title defenses since winning the strap and has not made a NJPW-only event since early October. He was going to defend against Beretta in November, but sat out due to a knee injury. Juice took Cody's place and beat Beretta to become the number one contender. Since Cody is going to be a part of AEW, expect this to be Juice's shining moment.
PREDICTION: Juice pins Cody and is the new IWGP US Champion.

6TH MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - IWGP Jr. HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
KUSHIDA (CHAMPION) VS. TAIJI ISHIMORI (CHALLENGER)
Jr_kushida_ishimori.jpg

- One of the matches that has had less build, but should make up for that with in-ring work. One thing to keep in mind is that there has been interest from Triple H to bring Kushida over to WWE. It's been unclear if it will happen, but it would be a major coup for the WWE since Kushida is the John Cena of NJPW's junior division. Taiji Ishimori is also very talented as a heel with Bullet Club, which was on full display during his run to the finals of the BOSJ tournament this summer. This would be his biggest moment in NJPW after coming on board in May from NOAH if he won this match. This is one of the more difficult matches to predict due to the various directions that can be reasonably taken. Here's a video describing the build to the match:
PREDICITION: Taiji Ishimori wins by pinfall via the Bloody Cross and is new IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion.

7TH MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - SPECIAL SINGLE MATCH
KAZUCHIKA OKADA VS. JAY WHITE
okada_jay.jpg

- In NJPW, single matches are usually used for title bouts or tournaments set up to appoint number one contenders. The fact that this grudge match is the third to last match at an event this big speaks to how big this rivalry is at a personal level. The story for this match has been taking place for the last calendar year. This post would be longer than a Jay Jordan article if I went in-depth about the build, so here's a cliff notes version.
--- Jay White joins Chaos, which is led by Okada, after initially turning down an offer to join Bullet Club from Kenny Omega in early January. White beats Omega for the US Title in late January.
--- During the spring and early summer, White is apprehensive about doing some traditional Chaos spots in tag team matches and blames teammates for failures. White is more focused on winning matches and using heel tactics while the rest of the faction is neutral at worst and babyface at best. White loses the US Title to Juice Robinson in early July.
--- During the opening match at the G1 tournament in July, White beats Okada using nefarious means. After the match, White states his intentions to become the new leader of Chaos.
--- At the end of the G1 in August, Okada announces that he is splitting with Gedo, his manager of 6+ years.
--- In late September, White attacks Okada after the latter's match against Tanahashi. White easily dispatches Yoshi-Hashi, who was making the save, after he had the botch of the year when he performed a Titus O'Neal, but legitimately injured himself. Yoshi-Hashi has not been seen since. After White shoved Rocky Romero and was going to hit Okada with a chair, Gedo initially made the save, only to hit the Rainmaker himself. Gedo aligns himself with Jay White.
--- In early October at King of Pro Wrestling, Okada saves Tanahashi after he's beat up by White after their match. Okada initially beats up White and Gedo, but is stopped by Gedo's buddy and presumed peacemaker, Jado. The Bullet Club promptly heads to the ring and tells Okada to beat up Gedo, but this is a trap as Tama Tonga hits Okada with a Gun Stun, and the beatdown is on. White, Gedo, and Jado all join Bullet Club. White is appointed the leader by Tama Tonga around Christmas. White has also mentioned that a "mole" is working for him inside of Chaos during the latest build-up to the match.
- This is another interesting and unpredictable match with endless outcomes being possible. Okada is the supremely talented babyface who is, in my opinion, the best pro wrestler in the world. White is the brash, upstart heel who has taken NJPW by storm. Normally, people like White would not be in a favorable position to win, but this could be different. Letting White win would shoot his stardom into the next level and make him a favorite to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. That would be an aggressive booking decision, but one that I believe won't happen.
PREDICTION: Okada pins White after hitting multiple Rainmakers.

Yep, pre-show is at 1 AM and main show starts at 2 AM. Right now the time difference between Iowa and Tokyo is 15 hours. If you wake up early enough you might be able to watch the last match or two.

Story Co.
Thanks for the rundown Drizzy! I've never been into NJPW or really anything other than WWE but Cody doing what he's done lately piqued my interest. Just watched All In on YouTube and I'm coming to the realization that there's no point in limiting myself to the uninspired, recycled crap Vince keeps pushing. I don't get AXS but I'm guessing I could use a family member/friend's Directv log in. Leaning toward trying that but I'm really tempted to just sign up on NJPW world since I haven't renewed my WWE network and don't plan on it anytime soon. Is it pretty similar to the network? Like will I be able to watch Wrestle Kingdom when it's convenient for me and do they have past shows archived? Any input would be very much appreciated!

8TH MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - IWGP INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP - NO DQ MATCH
CHRIS JERICHO (CHAMPION) VS. TETSUYA NAITO (CHALLENGER)
IC.jpg

- Like the match before it, this rivalry has been taking place for a year. Here's a brief version of what has happened between the two.
--- Jericho proclaims that he will never wrestle for New Japan again after losing to Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12. However, he attacks Naito the next night at New Year's Dash.
--- Naito wins the IWGP Intercontinental Championship from Minoru Suzuki in April.
--- In early May, Jericho is disguised as a fan wearing the mask of Naito's fellow LIJ member Bushi. After Naito's match, Jericho attacks him mercilessly, leaving him bloodied. A match for the Intercontinental title is set up between the two for Dominion in June.
--- Jericho defeats Naito at Dominion in a physical and violent match. Jericho continues to beat Naito after the bell until Naito's LIJ stablemate Evil makes the save. Jericho would disappear from NJPW for four months after this.
--- At King of Pro Wrestling in October, Jericho dresses as an extra for Evil's entrance and attacks him before his match with Zack Sabre Jr. This sets up Evil vs. Jericho at Power Struggle in November.
--- Jericho defeats Evil at Power Struggle in November. Jericho is beating him up after the bell when Naito makes the save. Naito asks for a match with Jericho for the title for Wrestle Kingdom, while Jericho adamantly refuses to give his approval. The NJPW office grants Naito his wish and here we are.
- Jericho has once again adapted his look and character during his time in New Japan. He is a sadistic, psychotic heel that will do anything to inflict punishment on his opponents. He looks like he could be a part of Suzuki-Gun right now. Naito is the cool, calm, and collected antihero babyface that has lots of charisma. Even though Bullet Club/The Elite are more popular in the US, Naito and his Los Ingobernables de Japon faction are the most popular wrestler and faction in Japan, and denying an offer from WWE this past year has made him even more popular. The No DQ stipulation has been added within the past day. Jericho has had a good run with NJPW for the past year, but having the title and taking a four month break with it brought comparisons to Lesnar's title reigns to mind. Naito is due for his revenge against Jericho and the Dome since he lost in the main event last year. Naito is due to be booked like a top tier star again and this match will jump start his renewed push.
PREDICTION: Naito pins Jericho after hitting the Destino onto a chair.

NJPW World is similar to the WWE Network, and you can watch Wrestle Kingdom and past events whenever you want. The only drawbacks that World has compared to the Network is that the search function isn't as efficient and there are less ways/devices to watch it through. For example, I can't watch World through my PS4 while the Network has an app for the PS4. World is usually around $9 a month, but it's better to sign up at the beginning of months and cancel at the end of months since you get billed on the 1st of the month no matter what and when you cancel, you don't have a grace period like with the Network. However, I have enjoyed having my subscription and find it to be worth it. If there's any more questions, I'm more than willing to help.

9TH MATCH - 60 MINUTES LIMIT - IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
KENNY OMEGA (CHAMPION) VS. HIROSHI TANAHASHI (CHALLENGER)
WK13_main.jpg

- The main event of the night, this will be a classic match. Both of these guys are 5 star match machines and this should be no different. The backstory is not as long as the previous two matches, but the intensity of this rivalry is just as high. This story started when Kenny beat Okada at Dominion for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. The following months, an older Tanahashi survived the G1 by winning his Block A Final versus Okada and then beating Kota Ibushi, cornered by Omega, at the G1 Final. After a couple of defenses by Omega and Tanahashi for their prized possessions, the match was set after King of Pro Wrestling in October.
- The story for this match has been an interesting one to say the least. The main point of contention between the two is their differences in wrestling ideologies. Kenny has taken the position that his modern version of in-ring work and more nuanced characters and storylines are what's best for NJPW and the fans right now. Tanahashi is more old-school in that he believes that there are too many risky stunts and that characters and storylines should follow the traditional heel vs. babyface dynamic. Both have been very critical of each other in press conferences and interviews. Kenny has been a babyface for most of the year but has been more heelish in this feud. Tanahashi is the superhero babyface that only comes around for certain promotions once every decade. The character development for this story has parallels that are similar to Rock vs. Hogan from Wrestlemania 18 IMO. Kenny is the upstart that is trying to prove that he is the present and the future of New Japan. Tanahashi is out to prove that he is still the standard for New Japan after being on top for so long. This clash will lead to some fantastic storytelling as this match takes place.
- Something to keep in mind is that Kenny's NJPW contract is up at the end of January. It is unknown at this time if he will stay or leave to go to AEW or maybe WWE. Out of the entire Elite collective, Kenny has the best shot of staying in NJPW, but who knows if he will choose to come closer to home since he's from Winnipeg, Canada or stay in Japan, which he has stated as being his second home and is fluent in the Japanese language. Tanahashi, however, has signed a new deal with NJPW, so there seems to be little doubt about his future. At the time this match was made, it seemed like Tanahashi would be used to help cement Omega's title reign, but with Kenny's future uncertain, it seems like Tanahashi is the logical choice to win. I'm sure that NJPW management would be flexible with Kenny if he wanted to wrestle for them on a part time schedule, but that wouldn't be great for the title to be a part of it. Kenny stated that his main goal in NJPW was to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, and even though his reign has been a little lackluster compared to when he chased Okada for the belt, he's fulfilled his wishes in NJPW. I expect this to be his last match and leave for AEW and for Tanahashi to play the air guitar and have his final reign with the top title start at the end of this show.
PREDICTION: Tanahashi pins Omega after hitting multiple High Fly Flows
