New Refrigerator Recommendations

We have a kitchen aid. Very nice and not much trouble for the 5 years or so. It’s a top French fridge with a middle drawer also. Bottom is the freezer. Water, ice all in door. It’s a monster, not sure the size but we had fairly open space to work with.

Here's my two cents.

I have a French door fridge with bottom freezer and love it. Maytag is the brand. I bought it at ApplianceSmart in Rochester before they closed their Minnesota locations. They have excellent deals. Only location left is in Columbus, Ohio.

Side by side units have significantly less storage space than over under units as there is about twice as much space separating the fridge and freezer. Although, side by sides make it easier to find things, especially in the freezer, as things don't get buried as much so there is give and take there.

My parents bought all kitchen aid appliances when they built their house 12 years ago. And they have been very reliable.

Ok, now I'll ask a similar, but widely different question. We're looking for a 'remote' refrigerator where the mechanics are located a good distance from the storage. Anyone know of one of those? I've seen them in wealthy homes where the occupants didn't want the noise, but for my purpose it's more a matter of my wife being EHS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an LG.... It was the only one that fit the space in my kitchen. I bought it in 2017 and already had 2 service calls to come out and fix it. To be fair, the 1st call was improperly diagnosed and so they had to come out a 2nd time. My point is: If you buy the LG, get the extended warranty.

If Bosch makes a fridge, go for it. I have a Bosch dishwasher and it's killer good.

Wherever the buyer is, check for the closest authorized LG service people before buying. They may be hard to find.

When Whirlpool purchased Maytag/Amana and closed Newton facility, they kept the Amana refrigeration facility in eastern Iowa as it was fairly efficient and made the popular French door units. I suspect most Whirlpool brand French doors are made there. We have Jenn-Air and have been happy with it.

what is EHS? You’re likely going commercial if remote condensing unit is the case and that’s going to add a ton more cost as now you’ll have refrigerant lines to run and another electrical connection to make (and maybe change your existing one?).

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) is a condition defined by the attribution of non-specific symptoms to electromagnetic fields (EMF) of anthropogenic origin.

Got this one a few years ago when the old one died. I like having the freezer on the bottom, keeps everything in the fridge at eye level. There’s an ice maker in the freezer but I never ran a water line

I am in my 60s and never had an icemaker. Chilled drinks, close enough. We have the similar 2 door french style to the Whirlpool model 11 years old absolutely no issues.

unless people have massive kitchens, like 500 sq feet, I can't imagine why we even have non-counter depth fridges. If it's not enough room for the food I'd put an extra cheap ugly fridge in the garage.

I cannot imagine my fridge sticking 8-10 inches out beyond my counter after having it fit perfectly for the past year.

Electro hypersensitivity. Thanks very much. I've researched 'commercial', but couldn't find anything residential looking. Considering the medical bills thus far, it is worth my while to fork out a bit more to appease this.

My LG I referenced earlier has been a good fridge. I have the french door top, freezer on bottom style. The ice does not come through the door... just reach in with my dirty hands and grab some cubes for my glass.... just like most restaurants do, lol.

My particular fridge needed to be fixed (water was leaking into the bottom of the freezer (then it would freeze). After a few weeks of ice build up, the water started leaking onto my floor and that is how I found out. The repair guy did say that it was rare... so I guess I was just a lucky one!

As one of my favorite country songs says: "If you want to keep the beer real cold put it next to my ex wife's heart."

The samsung fridge we have in the house we just bought is garbage. The icemaker freezes up constantly, and its a huge pain in the ass to clean.

We have a french door/bottom freezer with ice built into the door and one of those drawers in the middle for snacks/pop/produce. It's a Maytag that about 10 years old and we've had zero issues. The only thing that I dislike about it is that on those bottom freezers, things tend to get buried. With all of that said, I'd get the exact same model if I had to replace it.

We bought a new spec house 2 years ago that didn't come with a fridge either but they gave us I think 5K in credit so price wasn't a concern for us. We chose a side by side Kitchenaid and have had issues with the water line freezing a couple times. Seems like it goes into overdrive sometimes and super cools both fridge and freezer. It's also pretty loud.

My (somewhat silly?) requirement is to have the ice and water on separate controls in the door so I don't have to push a button every time to go between the two. It's easy to overlook when you're shopping around but a pain in the butt if you use them a lot like we do.

Odd since black appliances became the “in” style a few years ago. You guys are about 5-10 years behind if they are pushing stainless.

Are you referring to black, or black stainless steel?
