Moving to Ames

That wessex complex looks nice, I might have to consider that once my lease is up next year.

I went to a reception in their common building this weekend. Very nice place. Nice grounds. Suspect it is a bit pricey, but everybody was raving about how nice it all seemed.

Total Property has some apartments in Somerset and Northern Lights. $615-785 per month. Never had an issue using my grill as long as it was near my garage.

Thats who I am looking at going with if I can set up a place to stay for the month of July. They don't have any openings until Aug. 1st. I don't know any names of their apartments, but its the Somerset area on Polaris Dr. They have no issue with grilling there on the balcony/patio area which is a big plus for me.

In August I will be moving to Westwood Village rented by Haverkamp properties. They seem to be a good company so far, and I have a dishwasher/washing machine and dryer in the apartment. I pay 650 a month and that includes everything except for electric (which sucks because it's electric heat and I have AC).

Somerset seems pretty cool. Always seems well kept up. I've thought it was pricey, but I haven't actually priced them.

Also westwood village (depending on the apartment has balconies/patios.

I think most in Somerset are along Aspen Rd./Kent Ave.

Polaris Dr looks to be the apts over by Dahl's, so not Somerset area. Somerset would be the area between 24th Street and Bloomington Road off Northridge Parkway, about a mile west of where Polaris is. It would be the Northern Lights area, though.

Haverkamp Properties is big enough to likely be able to help you. They're also big enough that you'll be able to find detractors.
Disclaimer: I've rented from them, worked for them, and they are an ongoing client of mine.

I lived in 110 for 3 years and the balconies were huge. I thought Haverkamp was pretty easy to deal with other than the rolling eyes we would get from the girl who was ever taking the maintenance calls.

We also managed to get back more money than our deposit. Thanks Haverkamp for that one.

Ha! I lived at 302 Hickory Dr for a few years, starting in 1988. We moved in about a year after that particular building was built, so there were still some construction bugs (i.e. one of the toilets was connected to hot water). Way back then, the complex was owned by a retired ISU architecture (I believe) professor, who lived in the house to the northeast of the buidling.

Great apartment (at least it was back then), and I really liked living in that area.

Wow, you could LITERALLY have a steaming pile of **** :)

I would agree that the Somerset area is very nice and up and coming. There's a Fareway, newer (nice) restaurants, and close to campus without being in party central.

I am going to be moving to Ames in a month or so and am currently looking for places to live and trying to learn about the area. Does anybody have advice on property managers? Who to use or avoid? Good areas to live at? I'm not a student and am not looking to live in party central. It will be just me moving.

Also, what can you tell me about Ames? I'm excited about this move and think I will fit in with the culture of the area.

Did you ever have any luck finding a place? If you're still looking, I'm trying to sublease my apartment for the upcoming school year and could work with a July move date.

Polaris Dr. is duplexes they look nice from the outside and have nice garages but it seems to be more of a retirement age area right by the mall.
