Midsize (or compact?) Trucks

I'm enjoying the good conversation. I'm still rocking a 2003 S-10. I am a big fan of Honda, so maybe I should look at the Ridgeline the next time around.

That makes sense. I just assumed that someone looking for a midsize truck were not really concerned about pulling an 8,000lb RV or they'd be considering a full size truck. I know when I bought the Ram I was planning on pulling a pontoon with it otherwise I would have bought something like the Ridgeline.

To me it's a truck if it has a bed. I consider a Chevy Luv a truck and it can barely pull itself. I'm sure there are people that don't consider a 1/2 ton truck to be a truck because it can't pull as much or as well as a 3/4 and 1 ton.

Guess that's me. I only use the term truck for my semis or straight trucks and such. The rest are pickups to me.

If you're going to buy a truck, buy a real truck. Otherwise Id rather spend money on an SUV that can haul as much as a small truck and is much more usable the rest of the time.

You sure are making a lot of assumptions. Not everyone wants/needs a truck as a daily driver. I don't need a huge F series or Ram, but I'm also not going to take garbage to the dump in my wife's Equinox either. A mid-size truck would suit me just fine.

I had an F-150 I got rid of when gas hit $4 a gallon and went to an Edge. My wife has a mini-van so we figured we'd use that to haul stuff. Well that didn't last long before I'd get the stink eye every time I had to make a run to the dump or while we were finishing the basement and I was yanking the seats out to hall sheet rock or lumber. That's why I went and got a Tacoma. It hauls everything I need and I get better gas mileage than the Edge got.

Slightly off topic, but I just saw on a-u-t-o-b-l-o-g that there are spy shots of a 2018 F-150 with a diesel engine. The rumor is it's a 3.0L V6 from Jaguar Land Rover with 254 hp and 440 lb-ft - that's slightly higher output than the current 3.0L V6 in the Ram EcoDiesel.

I know a couple guys with the Ram Eco-Diesels and they're pushing 30mpg on the highway with those things. I thought long and hard about those but still couldn't touch one for under $45k around here. Fords been kicking this around for close to 10 years now. There were rumors of a diesel F-150 that was supposed to launch back in 2010.

I've owned 2 Ford Rangers. A 1999 XLT Super Cab 4x4 with the 4.0L 5 speed and my current one is a 2011 with the same features and the off road package. Great trucks. Nimble, easy to drive and reliable. 19-20 mpg highway is pretty average though with all the options. That said its still a truck with dedicated 4 wheel drive. But the 4x2 4cyl Rangers with the regular cab and 5 speed get 26-27 mpg highway if you really want gas mileage. Personally I'm waiting for the new mid size Rangers. They kick ass. People really like them overseas.

That sucks. I'd be happy to pay a $3000 premium for a diesel engine in a full size truck, but I don't want to pay another $5000 for the premium packages that are required to even make the diesel an option.
