He’s not a pocket passer, but we have him trapped in the pocket. He needs to be rolling out, moving the pocket, and running the football to be successful. Instead we trap him in the pocket where he isn’t comfortable, and he has inaccurate passing issues off his back foot.
Agreed. With a man on secondary a scrambling quarterback can gain huge chunks of yardage.

There’s no way I would trust our offensive line to be able to manage this type of blocking concept. They can’t block for standard pocket passing plays. Imagine trusting them to have the ability to manage a moving pocket.

I couldn't tell if the WR struggles were due to poor route running, poor calling, poor talent... some combination of all 3? You can't tell me this Sun Belt team is stacked with some world beaters in their secondary. Our guys had no separation, routes seemed boring and predictable. I feel as though being depleted in the WR room has kind of gone under the radar this preseason. It's a series issue. No playmakers equals boring and/or vanilla offense

I thought Shaw and someone else were pretty good at getting some YAC on shorter routes but ISU didn't really stick with it.

It was back to that 2nd and 4, go for 15 type of deal that is now just normalized.

I agree. We got no separation. They smothered us knocking down pass after pass. On the two occasions we did get past them they were over thrown. Either their secondary was scary good or our Receivers run like old men.

With Kolar out today 3 of our top 4 receivers from last year we’re gone. A lot of the balls that were forced to XH would have gone to Kolar. With Downing’s injury our Oline experience was cut in half. I find the offensive struggles to be somewhat predictable.

What is baffling is how bad the special teams continues to be. It is unbelievable how no coach is directly responsible for 1 of the 3 phases of football at ISU.

If he is a junior QB at a power-5 school, he should be able to stand in the pocket and throw a pass with halfway decent mechanics.

That's not asking too much, in fact it should be a basic requirement.

It don’t help when his main target looks like Larry Fitzgerald and catches balls like Larry the plumber. I’m suprised he kept throwing him the ball

I don’t disagree. But I also think you should design the offense around the strengths of your players, and static pocket passing Isn’t Purdy’s strength.

I've said this about Ferentz for years - You can't fire the OC and expect a change. You're getting what the head coach wants too. It's not like Campbell and Manning never talked before the game and the play calls were all brand new to him. Campbell has a headset on gameday. Unless it's turned off he knows what's happening.

Manning’s return as offensive coordinator in 2019 was an enormous success, directing the most prolific offense in school history while aiding the Cyclones to their third-straight bowl game and second-straight top-three finish in the Big 12 Conference.

The Cyclones averaged the most yards per game in the history of the program in 2019 at 444.3, breaking a record that stood since 1976 to rank 27th in the nation. Iowa State was able to do most of its damage in the air with QB Brock Purdy setting virtually all of ISU’s season passing marks, including passing yardage (3,982) and passing touchdowns (27), to help the Cyclones break another school record and rank 11th nationally in passing offense (311.3).

Manning’s offense racked up a school-record 714 yards against ULM and tallied over 400 yards of offense in 10 of 13 games. The Cyclones also set school marks in the following categories: touchdowns (53), points (418), touchdown passes (29) and first downs (298).

Behind Manning’s balanced attack and work with the running game, Iowa State also established a school record in yards per play (6.45) to rank 17th nationally. The emergence of true freshman running back Breece Hall, who was a Second-Team All-Big 12 pick and a Freshman All-American by The Athletic, played a huge role in ISU’s offensive success.

Yeah I never have been a fan of his offenses.... some games they are amazing and too many times it’s like what the heck it’s like their is no solid direction or great adjustments as the game goes. I get he’s a smart offensive minded person but I just don’t think at this level of football his abilities to be in charge of what should be having the players we have should have been that rough of a struggle. And I’m going to probably look at this the wrong way but they kept saying how much of a height miss match our receivers were to their secondary and they played us man so why didn’t we exploit that...? They came out and were very physical and it’s like we folded even though we were the bigger team .

The O-line has been piss poor the entire time CMC has been here. We'll never take the next step as a program until the issue is resolved.

This is the biggest issue with our offenses going back as long as I can remember. If you don't have a good OL, you're doomed... and we haven't had even a decent one for a very long time.
Make no mistake though.... Manning is terrible. We came out and planned on running over this team, and when they began to stop that... we had no answer whatsoever. I don't remember us having a single WR open all day, except for Akers on the fly pattern which Purdy overthrew. That was so frustrating.

We had a 4.1 yd per catch average yesterday. Like CW said after orwards.... that is nearly impossible to do.

And CMC ticked me off in his press conference when he was asked about the slow starts to seasons and playing down to the level of the other team..... he basically said it wasn't a fair question because each year it's a totally different team. Okay.... but the one constant is the head coach and the terrible OC. I know CMC isn't an offensive minded coach, but he seriously needs to get an OC that is then.

That was so embarrassing to watch that offense yesterday. Nothing was sharp, and once again as always... no creativity or misdirection, etc at all. It's almost like it's a manly thing with CMC or something? He wants the team to just come out and ground and pound all day and impose their will on the opponent. That's fine, but we've never had an OL that can do that. We have to get very creative to move the ball.... but we refuse to do that.

We need to bring back the screen pass as an extension of our running game. With able blocking this would be a play where Milton can burn people and get some easy yards, he does not need a big hole to move upfield. This will also keep the D more honest in two weeks.
