lattimer and howard suspended indefinately

I think if you committed rape or murder, you would be in prison and therefore unable to participate in athletic events.

If you were convicted, then yes. These trials can take time, would it be OK to let someone play until they were PROVEN guilty? I realize I am now going to the other extreme and here but I am trying to get my point across (probably a waste of breath).

Again I am not saying that JL deserves any specific level of punishment because I do not know the specifics and to be honest what I think doesnt really matter because CPR will have the final decision. Every program has its problems, and when you are dealing with hundreds of kids across all of the sports you are bound to have some issues. I just hope that the fact that JL is a starter at a position where we need a playmaker does not factor into the decision of how he is punished.

Yes. Innocent until proven guilty. Sounds cliche, but thats how it works.

Im not a win at all costs guy. Im a guy who doenst need my work, school, or team worried about what I did on the weekend. Its a differnet angle im taking. If I miss practice or a game due to my actions on the weekend, then I should absolutely be punished.
Like with Howard, the legal penalties for an OWI are no walk in the park. At all. He'll get his. So why suspend him for a game too unless he misses practice? Its the age old debate, should you get more punishment from your school or work for what you did outside of that arena. Like, should I be penalized at work for getting an OWI on my own time as long as it doesnt affect my work? I say no. Same with football.

Before knowing Jacob jumped and brutally beat a much weaker individual for no reason a few years ago at his community college, I would've said his assault on an officer deserved a minimum 2-3 game suspension. But after reading about that particular incident, I don't want him back. Just my opinion. The "win at all costs" crowd will disagree, I'm sure.

Really? Get rid of him for something he did before he came? You're an idiot. And he didn't beat up a cop either.

I still say that they both get one game. I'm expecting Story County to throw the book at Latt though.

So do I. DAs are less willing to plead down with an offender who is still on probation for a previous conviction of a similar infraction (and in particular, someone on probation for assault), since it can indicate a developing behavior pattern. If the DA pleads down to some kind of suspended sentence, and the offender gets in trouble again, it's bad publicity for the DA, and they may not want to take that risk.

At least so I've heard from lawyers about similar situations. We have lawyers on CF who can probably comment about that.

For Lattimer's sake, I really hope the story report that he tried to pull a cop off of his buddy to help him escape is not true, because if it is, given the above, I don't see how he avoids some jail time.

I'd be more concerned with the county in Kansas he got his original charge. Odds are he got a suspended sentence. Throw in a probation violation of similar assault in nature then the sentence could be imposed for felony battery.

If Lattimer put his hands on an officer after being on probation and only gets one game, then we should be embarrassed. I agree Howard is looking at the standard one game. Unless the rumors are wrong about Lat, anything less than all non-conference games would not be supportable. I wouldn't be surprised if Lat was done if he actually put hands on an officer.

Alright, Lattimer was previously sentenced to two years probation with an underlying sentence of one year in prison and there was a requirement he couldn't drink. This whole thing happened less than a year ago. He could be in serious trouble. They could also drop all charges and be done with it too but I was just clearing up what his sentencing was and the timeline.

Correct. But just to clarify even if the charges were dropped, a violation of probation could still be issued by his probation officer.

I agree. And that's why, if he did in fact pull the officer off his buddy to help him escape (which seems to be the latest rumor), I don't see him coming back...or at the very least getting a 3 game suspension.

The article detailing out Lattmer's previous charges was published in August of 2009 "Published: 8/31/2009 10:41 PM ". So it's been more than a year, since the incident. 5 months away from completing his probation assuming it ends in August.

Yeah, you're right. For some reason I was a year off. My bad.

I completely agree with the having to take risks part. What I disagree with is putting up with infractions while they are here. Royce for instance-I said that I wanted to take him but I wanted a short leash. I would feel the same here. I am all for second chances and if the debt to society was paid for previous transgressions, great, let them have their shot but at some point you have to draw a line. IMO, a line hasn't been drawn yet here. I'm not saying this is the instance to do it but I don't think I am out of line being slightly concerned with some of the events that have taken place recently and would prefer it slowed down a little. I know it won't ever completely stop and I don't expect everyone who has a run in with the law to be booted, but at some point with certain individuals, enough is enough.

In this case with Lattimer I think the details are so extremely important. If he simply pulled a cop off his buddy because he thought the cop was in the wrong, I think 2-3 games would suffice. I thought 1 game was enough for Sims. Now, if he made an aggressive move at the cop like tried to tackle or threw a punch or something, I guess I would say he probably needs to go. Like I said we know none of the details. Without those, this instance is very hard to judge in a way that's fair. Howard is different. That's pretty cut and dried.
yaman, I agree 100% here. You make a gerat point with the bolded part. If a person commits a crime and serves their punishment and pays their debt to society then great. The one issue with this is IF Lattimer is still on probation, he has not completely fulfilled his debt to society. Particularly since those charges were greatly reduced with the condition he stays clean.
IMO- the how the courts react to this should help make the football punishment decision. the good thing for Lattimer is the courts are very leneient these days.
