Jealous of all these LASIK stories. I have such a severe astigmatism that they still can’t repair me. It’s only been two years since they came out with a soft daily contact powerful enough to get me to 20/30 so I can use them for sports well enough.
I have a pretty good astigmatism and I was told I could have LASIK but never had it done. I was told there was no daily soft contact for me though. My contacts are -3.0 / -2.75 / 90

Iowa Eye Care in Cedar Rapids does it. Have heard of several that have done it there.

I had Lasik done a few years ago with Wolfe and it was fantastic. It still frequently hits me how nice it is to just wake up and be able to see and also not to have to worry about packing contacts, contact case and saline when I travel. Wolfe seemed to have the latest and greatest equiptment and permanent eye doctors that would be around if I ever needed anything. They also called me that evening to make sure I was doing ok.

My vision was -5.5 in one eye and I think around -1 in the other so I definitely wasn’t bumping into walls without correction but the difference in prescription did mean that I couldn’t wear glasses very well. I do have an astigmatism so I was getting close to the cut off point where they wouldn’t be able to do the proceedure. I think at the time they told me that it was +/- 6 with astigmatism and =/-12 without.

On a side note, they have patients take an anxiety pill before and numb their eyes with drops for the proceedure and then give you a pain pill for after. If I had to do it all again, I’d skip the pills entirely. I don’t think the pain pill did much but make me queasy. It hurts like you have shampoo in your eyes for a few hours and they water a lot, then all of a sudden that stops and like a miracle you can see (but with stupid eye shields taped over your eyes).

On another note, my sister’s corneas were too thin for Lasik and she had PRK done (they don’t create a flap and laser behind the flap, they laser the outer layer of the cornea). I wouldn’t ever suggest it. She was off work for a week but because her eyes had to heal from what feels like a really bad corneal abrasion and she couldn’t see well enough to work and it took 6 months or longer for her vision to correct itself.

If you use Wolfe, definitely ask them if they have anything that qualifies you for a discount. Hope this is helpful!

I had Lasik done just over a year ago. If you're willing to travel, Nebraska Laser Eye Associates in Omaha is great. The dude went to MIT!

I just had surgery a few weeks ago and could not be more pleased. I was nearsighted and my correction power for distance was -1.25 (so not a lot), but for work & play contacts and glasses were not cutting it.

My advice is take advantage of free consultations to shop around and get a feel for the people who will be involved in the entire process (nurses, doctors, financing/billing, receptionist, etc.). Also, read up on the different types of procedures, risks/complications, national average costs, reviews, etc. There seems be a lot of bad information on the interwebs, so vet your information carefully. If it is your thing read peer-reviewed literature on the procedures too. Lastly, talk with your eye doctor- they will likely have opinions on certain clinics.

Ultimately, I had a quote for to get LASIK on both eyes for $6,600 at one clinic and $1,400 at another. It was the same procedure with similar equipment. I decided on the less expensive quote and I even felt more comfortable with the staff at that clinic. In summary, just because one is more expensive than the other it does not necessarily mean it is better or you will get better treatment.

Went with LasikPlus in Overland Park, Kansas in 2005. It was about 1700 an eye for the lifetime with the specs of my eyes. Gave the wife a 10% discount and her specs weren't as bad as mine, so hers came out to about $1200 an eye.

And yes, it was the best money I've ever spent in my entire life.

You might want to check around. I was told by Wolfe clinic that I couldn't have LASIK done due to an irregular astigmatism (they were concerned I'd end up with corneal ectasia). I ended up going to Minnesota Eye Consultants to be considered for a research study on corneal cross linking and the surgeon I spoke to said I'd be perfectly fine with doing a PRK instead of LASIK. After doing a bunch of my own research I came to the same conclusion. It also helped that my buddy (who is an optometrist) said that my surgeon was one of his professors and raved about him.

Seven years later I could not be happier. Every situation is different of course, but I'm glad I looked around. Granted it was more expensive than even Wolfe Clinic was, but I'd do it again in a heart beat.

I will echo the previous comments (I would assume due to everyone else being lifelong glasses/contact wearers like I was at the time) -- best money ever spent.

It was the first thing I saved up for once I started my career after college, and it was well worth it. I had mine done in 2003 at Dr. Husein in DSM. 20/20 ever since.

If I were to ever need it again, (if it's physically possible to have it done twice) I would do it in a heartbeat.

I tried to get an enhancement (15 years after) and my Doc said I wouldn't be happy with the results... I didn't seek a second opinion but I might since it was a life-changing procedure for me.

How long was your recovery after PRK?

Similar as others. I had it done maybe...7/8 years ago. Best investment I've ever made. Went through Wolfe for the same reason as others...I wan't the best and was willing to pay for it. I don't remember my +/- but I believe I was around 4. I had astigmatisms as well. I was 20/15 and 20/10 corrected. I think it ran me about $3,500 total.

Me too. My eyes are -9.5 and -11.5 and I’ve been told there’s no way I can have it. I can’t even wear soft contacts. I use rigid gas perms.

God those ******* things are the worst. My parents retirement would look a lot brighter with all of the money I wasted by losing one or both of those things 100 times in my teen years.

What was your prescription prior to the operation?

I am around -12.5 and -13.5 and was told by Wolf Eye Clinic due to the size of my pupils they would have to take to much material to make the correction so I couldn't have it done.

I was told they could do the cataract surgery where they implant a corrective lens when they remove the old one.

Had it through Mcfarland Eye Center in Ames 8-10 years ago. All appointments were in Ames but the surgery was in West Des Moines. My eyes were in the -2.5 range and cost about $1600-1800 per eye. Very pleased with how the whole process went and the results. They gave me the numbing drops and Valium before surgery and I highly recommend it if you have any anxiety about it whatsoever. Had no problem relaxing and sitting like a statue during the procedure and walked out of there with a big grin on my face.

I have always gone to Wolfe for my eye check ups, but had my lasik done at LasikPlus in Des Moines. My surgeon had done more procedures and they used the same technology as Wolfe. There was just no reason to pay the extra cost. As others have said, getting lasik was one of the best decisions I've made.
I have a consultation at LasikPlus tomorrow. I am super excited! I am looking at them because they have tremendous reviews on Google and the price of Wolfe concerns me a bit. I talked to a few people that went to LasikPlus and they thought it went very well.
