Lard looks good

True with Ray, but your eye for basketball is bad if you don't notice the difference between Lard and Carter.

I'm talking about when they are throwing down dunks in warm ups. I could take a video from the bleachers every time any of our bigs dunk and most fans wouldn't notice the difference.

I'm in no way comparing Lard to Carter.

The key with most bigs, is whether they can catch the ball in live action, and can he take a couple of dribbles on the way to the hoop..

Basically all guys with his length and build can dunk like that, but at least now we know he actually exists.

Having said all this, there are lots of examples out there of great shooters with poor technique. Lonzo Ball has terrible form, but it works.

In the case of my local high school team, most have horrible form, and none of them can hit the broad side of a barn.

Who was that guy from Missouri a few years ago when they were still in the Big 12 (and had a pulse)? He had pretty bad form but made a good percentage. I always got mad because it seemed unfair that bad form could make so many shots.

It's fascinating because he shot a decent percentage in high school while being able to get his shot over future DI players, but what I have seen of his shooting form (pre-February), he's got such a low release, he looks like wouldn't be able to get many shots off. I'd guess fixing his shot is main thing that kept him from getting more spot minutes in non-con. Hopefully Prohm can coach it; we knew Fred could.

Well, Long IS shooting 50% from behind the arc this season.......;)

I think Carter has confidence issues inside the lines. Coordination issues too. Just my opinion, and I don't want to rail on him too hard, because he seems like a really good, positive teammate.
No one seems to articulate why they have issues with Carter. I don't think he is anywhere near as bad as people think he is. He was very raw last year, but has seemed to grow in to his body this year and looks better. He still is fairly raw, but I think he can be a solid roll player in the future if he does stay around.

Kasongo I haven't seen much at all, but the little I have seen he seems like he is much closer to his full potential, but still right around where Carter is.

The game looks too fast for him. Looks like he thinks too much when he's out there, and when he is, it's garbage time. I imagine it would be more pronounced when the game is in the balance. That's as good as I can do to articulate.

But Young looked like that early this year too. Both guys I can see it is there, but it just had to click for Young. It hasn't clicked yet for Carter because I don't think he has gotten enough playing time for it to click. Now don't get me wrong in saying I want to start seeing Carter now, but he should have seen some time early in the year to try and get it to click.

I think the biggest thing for his shot is that he needs to rise up more, get off the ground a bit more and he has the ability to make more shots, easier for himself.
There are some coaches who go the exact opposite way on this. The thought is that as you get tired, your jump in your jump shot becomes less consistent and you will leave more shots at the front of the rim.

Completely agree with you. We were looking at practice video of Lard throwing down dunks, and people were somehow able to view this and say how good of a basketball player he was going to be. Really?

Simeon Carter, as you mentioned, looks exactly the same in practice throwing down dunks. It doesn't translate at all to how good of a basketball player you are.

It's very fun to watch, but doesn't tell you much. I'm excited about Lard mostly because some of the game clips I've seen, and because of how highly he was rated and who recruited him, but not because of him throwing down dunks in practice.

With all that being said, I'm thrilled that someone posted video of it. I love watching these clips as much as anyone.

Not to be "that guy" but it's warmups. I'm not anti-Lard, but it's warmups.

Channeling your inner AIlen?

And your video would show a lot of differences between the two. You must not have watched a lot of recruits come through if you can't see that. I don't think anyone is concentrating on the fact he dunked- that's not what we're looking at. Lard is a lot more athletic. He's more coordinated and agile than Carter. He has a better shot and better feet and hands than Carter, too. Don't even get me started on the Greek. Really, the bar is admittedly low- we haven't had much size that even passed the eye test. And let's not act like this video is in a vacuum. It's consistent with other things we've seen and read.

The thread title said he looks good, not that he is good. Many of our 6'8" plus guys didn't even pass this eye test. Maybe he is another Kasongo and is a great athlete that's not good at basketball. But he's got 8 months of good coaching to go before he's even a freshman, so lots of time to improve.

It's a very entertaining clip, and it's good to see the team seems to be pretty loose, but I wouldn't take anything at all from those clips about how good of a basketball player Lard is. Youtube clips of actual games would give you a lot more info.

Probably 90% of guys in college basketball that are as tall as Lard will be able to do exactly what he's doing in those practice clips. He's just throwing down uncontested dunks and hitting a few 15 foot jumpers.

I am really excited about having him and Young the next 3 years together though. Add in Wigginton and Lewis, and a Weiler-Babb, who I think is going to take his game to the next level now that he'll be "the man", and I think we'll have a very fun team to watch at least.

Tough to say if they'll be good enough to make the NCAA's next year, that might be too much to ask, but it will be exciting to watch these guys all develop.

I'd say if you put Stu, Simeon and Solomon through the same drills Lard would still stand out. I'm no judge of horseflesh, but he looks very agile and athletic in those clips.

In dunking drills it would not look any different. Go to a practice and watch them do these drills. They can all do that.

Once again......I think Lard will be good and I'm looking forward to his development. I don't think Carter is good.

No, not really. No one said that

Again it's not the dunk. You must be a wrestler.
