Lanning

Use Lanning like K State uses Daniel Sams for 20% of snaps and use Richardson for most of the downs they use Waters. If Lanning plays well let him be the full time guy.

Rohach not getting a few snaps a game made him less prepared when he finally got a chance. Might as well let Lanning get a few snaps a game no matter what and run some read option.

Sounds good, and it could keep Richardson healthier. I still think Sam has what it takes when he's healthy and with a healthier and productive o-line.

So you seem to have some inside information what have you heard about coaching changes? I heard last week from the offensive side of the ball it was just going to be moving people around. No real change on defense. I kind of let it go in one ear and out the other, but then I heard the exact thing from Randy Peterson on the Miller and Brinson show.

Haven't heard much about offense. Heard possibly that Rhoads is looking elsewhere but can't confirm. FWIW, rumors are swirling that Wally is going to retire after this season, and it's not set in stone that Shane is the next DC. Team may see a lot of changes next year.

In regard to QB situation, the players seem to respond the best to Richardson/ Lanning is what I've heard. Both look good in practice (when healthy) and natural leaders.

Do you think there is any chance if Wally does retire Rhoads doesn't name a DC and reserves defensive play calling duties for himself? I just figured that would be less money to pay a DC and then maybe he could pump more money into getting a quality OC.

Rhoads is a defensive coach but I don't see this happening. If anything, he will just promote Shane to DC. Messingham makes the 3rd most out of Big 12 OC's behind Texas and Oklahoma, so we have somewhat of a money appeal to get someone here for OC.

It's really hard to do that as a HC.

That's the answer I expected, and I did not know Mess makes that much comparatively.

LOL WUT? Holy pants, I didn't know that. Luckily I don't even care anymore otherwise I would have had a heart attack.

I am sorry to almost cause you a heart attack. But yes, he makes 337,000/ year which is good for 3rd in the Big 12.

Too much work? I was basing it on the idea he would give the OC near complete control, similar to how Leach is essentially the OC and gives his DC complete control.

I think there's just more going on from a scheme adjustment standpoint. I don't know for sure but it feels to me like as a defensive coach you are always reacting and changing. Offensively you aren't changing scheme, really, mostly just play calls. Intuitively, it seems like DCs are usually on the sidelines while the OC is up top. That indicates there is less interaction need and more "information" need on the OC side. The reverse on the defensive side. I can't think of a DC/HC off the top of my head either.

I guess I just think of defense being more work on the ground. Maybe I'm wrong here.

Well, this makes sense, as Oklahoma and Texas are ahead of us in most offensive categories. Why is everyone upset about this? I don't think CM should be making more than those coaches. Sheesh.

I believe Chris or someone (WRNL?) wrote a story about that awhile ago. I read it somewhere too.

By far and away the deepest unit next season and its not even close. I wouldnt even know where to start with the list, but we lose no starters, in fact, we have only 1 upperclassman (Farniok who is a Jr).

This is only true if you consider "depth" to simply be "available bodies." I consider "depth" to mean there is experienced talent on the bench ready to step in or take reps. Unless something drastic changes in the offseason, we will have bodies with experience but that doesn't mean we have depth. Most of the guys have played out of necessity, not because they earned it. This position will be a huge, huge question mark next season.
