Kickoff Misery

Our gap discipline and lane assignments were awful on that returning. If our guys are in the right spot the KU returner doesn't even run that one out. This wasn't a one time thing, special teams are a freakin disaster.
Well, it's a two way street. Great plays made by CYCLONE players are usually due to the other team's mistakes too. 103 yard kickoff return is a great play regardless of gap assignments. Kudos to Mr. Logan!

Iowa State and Kansas State are polar opposites with special teams. Their offense is 54 in efficiency, defense is 46, but special teams is #1. ISU's offense is 28 (despite all the hate for our offense), 22 on defense, but 82nd on special teams.

I firmly believe we'd win more games if our special teams weren't so horrible. I think we finished 113 last year and 106 the year before. KState on the other hand isn't great at anything. They just don't make mistakes and win in the margins including special teams.

. . .
Assuming it was a regular kick, I think the analytics for the drop kick are interesting. We probably concede more returns between the 25 and 35 and fewer stops inside the 20 in exchange for no touchdown returns.
If you're going to do that, then it seems like you should just kick it out of bounds and not risk anything.

It was a regular kickoff. I was just shocked (okay not really) that we still couldn’t kick it out if the back of the end zone even with a 20mph ride.

I think the wind was at least that. The kickoff was not very high, and got to the return guy very fast. Coverage was not good either, but the actual kickoff being better solve the other issue before it starts.

The problem is that if you stink that bad at coverage teams will start taking the penalty and make you kick it over 5 yards further back. Really need to fix both parts, the actual kicks and the kick coverage.

and if we get bad enough, teams are going to start letting us score just so we have to kickoff again! :jimlad:

Unbelievable how many on this site simple are resigned to kicking it to the best player and watch him run for a TD. Yep, it's fate. AND, even congratulate him.

Multiple things by the kicking team will ABSOLUTELY prevent this.

Staying in your lane is 101 for kickoff coverage. I doubt coaches are telling the kids to not stay in their lane. For some reason we have trouble executing something that is so simple.

It requires discipline. Isheem Young although very talented, got a little ahead of himself and came flying towards the ball carrier instead of staying in his lane. Film study, practice, execution. It's really as simple as that.

CMC talks a lot about what Iowa State has to overcome to win compared to other programs. Poor STs can't be a factor if we are going to ever be 'elite'. It just surprises me that Matt hasn't brought someone in to focus on our return games.

That team is the definition of "not beating themselves". I've ALWAYS admired their way of doing things...

Seems like we were practicing some "stuff" on kickoffs on Saturday. The squibs that gave them the ball around the 35-40 were working, if you are willing to concede decent starting position for not giving up a huge return.

Worth it? Id say yeah, probably.

I would like to see ISU do what OSU has been doing on kickoffs. Place the ball on the left hash on your side of the field, most teams return to their bench, stacking your kickoff between the right hash, back to your bench and the out of bounds So you eliminate at least one third of the field. Try to kick the ball between the left hash and the out of bounce line. The return team then has to make a choice to try to go straight up the field, into the teeth of your coverage, or return it to their bench, running all the way across the field left to right, and the kick off team has the out of bounds on that side to make sure they cannot bounce it wide.

So, was the kickoff return by Kene Nwangwu tonight that changed the direction of the game vs. Baylor a great play by a great player or simply missed gap assignments by Baylor? Inquiring minds want to know! I think it was a great play by a great player just like last week's KO return for a TD by Kenny Logan, Jr. of KU!

Somebody is always waiting in the weeds to find something to ***** about. Last week Young crashed from his lane, overran the ball and we were gashed in the space he voided. Watch the endzone replay.

This week I really haven't watched the replay yet.
