NFL: Kansas City Chiefs Thread

Drafted about as well as they could have. Filled a lot of needs and I think Skyy Moore was a sneaky good pick in the 2nd round. As always can never stop adding talent on the defense so hope they can pounce on a veteran on that side of the ball that maybe gets cut in a cap savings move by someone

Hoping they could still somehow sign Jarvis Landry but after the draft, not sure they would want to invest more the WR corp. Hopefully they adjust play calling some and go more run heavy with the good OLINE they have. Still have a ways to go to shore up the defense and hopefully Spags adjusts his scheme this year if they don't have the pass rushers to force the ball out quickly.

I assume Landry is at the point in his career where he will demand more money than what the Chiefs want to pay.

Appears @ Houston Week 1 and then Chargers at home on Thursday Night in Week 2.

I know it's early but already hearing NFL talk that has me excited about FB season. Thoughts on possibly depth chart going into camp?

QB: Not much here other than a battle to be the 3rd QB between Buechele and Crum
RB: Lot of different looks they should be able to throw at teams with CEH, Jones, McKinnon, and Gore
WR: Looking forward to seeing how this new group plays out without Hill. JuJu, Hardman, Skyy Moore, Valdes-Scantling, then have some wild cards in Josh Gordon and Justyn Ross in the mix too. Non are the caliber of Hill but as a group it looks a lot deeper on paper than it has in recent years
TE: nothing new here with Kelce and Bell back
OL: Should be OK again this year, will be interesting to see if rookie Kinnard is in the mix for a starting spot

Defense:
Does Frank Clark become a salary cap causality or do they roll with him again?
Did the Chiefs do enough to address the secondary? A lot is riding on McDuffie, Reid, Thornhill, and others to fill in the voids.
Excited to see year 2 of Nick Bolton at LB and if Karlaftis can add some pass rush at DE

The AFC West is going to be a bloodbath I think as every team got better this offseason and now there are 4 very good QB all in the same division. The divisional games are going to be very important to win as they may be the toughest teams on the schedule other than Buffalo. I think all 4 team's fan bases probably feel their team has the talent to win the division if they are healthy and best case scenarios play out with their roster production.

They restructured Clark so he will be on the team. I was upset they decided to keep him but cutting him would of resulted in a lot of dead money. I hope we see less of him if he's not performing. Defensive line needs to be dramatically improved it's the unit we've invested quite a bit on last few years and it was very mediocre last year. I'm also worried about the secondary as you mention but a good pass rush can alleviate some of those issues

Part of the issue with the line last year was they were playing Chris Jones on the edge early in the season and he is not an edge rusher. Once they moved him back into the interior he was more effective. Hoping that Karlaftis is the real deal as that would be a big boost to the pass rush. Not sure why the Chiefs keep going cheap on the secondary but hoping that McDuffie is the start of a new trend to improving a unit they keep neglecting to improve at. It feels like they finally shored up the OL which was an issue a couple years ago but CB has been a revolving door and have turned over at Safety recently too now. I know they have a lot of money tied up with other players so I am hoping that we keep seeing solid contributions from guys they drafted like we have the past couple years. They really hit on both of their 2nd round picks last year in Bolton and Humphrey. The 2020 draft has been a mixed back with CEH, GayJr. Niang, and Sneed. 2019 was Hardman, Thornhill and Fenton so they have had some guys recently drafted starting to fill in the voids

Good point on Jones. Have they confirmed he's staying inside this year? It seemed like Karlaftis was a sure fire top 10 pick until they measured his arms. Hopefully the nerds are wrong on him that about only pick in first half that wasn't graded highly by the "experts"

Sounds like Brown wants more than he is worth.
Meh, he's a 26 year old tackle, angling for his first contract after his rookie deal. He's betting on himself. Hasn't missed a start in 3 years. He knows that he'd get a better deal on the open market than what they're offering, so he'll exercise the option he has under the rules and hold off on signing his franchise tag. They can't penalize him, because he's not under contract. He'll sign it before the season starts, and collect a top 5 tackle salary this year. Even if he plays at the same level he did this past year, so long as he stays healthy, he gains leverage over the Chiefs, because his price will get outrageous if they try to franchise him a second time.
It's not a plan without risk, but he's set to make over 4 times more in one year on the franchise tag than he did than on the entirety of his rookie contract. Even if he gets hurt, $16 million is big chunk of change.

It only goes up to 120% if they franchise him again next year, so they get him for 2 years at about $19m or essentially what they were trying to get him for 5 years in addition to the $30m+ signing bonus. He may have bet on himself, but the Chiefs hold the card for 2 years. If he signs a long term contract with a team after that, he's probably miss out on a 2nd big contract like Trent Williams signed at 31.

The issue isn't the $19 million in 2023 for Brown. It's the way that his $19 million would hit their cap at the same time as Mahomes at $46 million, Frank Clark at $30 million, Chris Jones at $27 million, Joe Thuney at $22 million, and Travis Kelce at $14 million, just to name the highest. If you throw in a 2nd year tag number of $19 million for Brown, that's $158 in cap money, which would be 2/3 of your (projected) cap for 6 guys. Not very tenable for a team trying to win championships.

And don't get me wrong, some of those guys will have their deals reworked, and some will be cut, outright. My point is that Brown's negotiating position with the team improves, as any long term deal he signs next season would have a first year cap hit significantly lower than the $19 million it would cost if he was tagged again. That's exactly why he's betting on himself to stay healthy.

Except he isn't even a top ten tackle in the league.

I'm not claiming he is. But the franchise tag pays him like he is. So long as his performance doesn't fall off of a cliff, a 26/27 year old tackle who hasn't missed a start will get a better deal than the one the chiefs have offered him. That's what he's betting on.

I know what he is betting on but I am saying that seems like a bad bet. Most teams don't even see him as a LT. He is an ok LT. Probably already getting paid more than he is worth.
