Jeff Goodman has ISU #11

Both our land grants are starting off strong. I wonder if either has a lingering swoon coming?

We all know it's coming. 2nd time through the schedule, the coaches in this conference are good enough to figure things out. Even with the good start, I think most of us would say it's a great season if we make the tournament. And I would think that KSU fans would be in the same boat.

Yeah, Grill is much better this year. He's more consistent with his shot, not out of position on defense as much, better rebounding. I actually think that Gabe is inching forward into being semi-consistent with his shot. Not great by any means, but better.

I think he has got the defense down, and the required conditioning. And now has been able to spend some effort on offense too. To some extent, it feels like that is the whole team this year vs last.

One thing I think I have noticed... if Grill is taking a 3 that was passed to him from inside, he makes like 80% of those. If the pass is from the perimeter, then it's way lower %. Just footwork, or being more square to start with I suppose, and likely that's universal to all shooters. But it REALLY seems to be a big factor for him.

As painful as that Iowa game was, it really was a game of two extremes. We couldn’t make anything and they could not miss. Even had they shot around 40% from 3 and us 25% that game is a close one. Another huge FT differential which is an ongoing problem.
We need to do something about the FT differential. Against TCU we were 3-9 (oof) and TCU was 16-28.

There shouldn't be any shock if ISU is 3-3 in 1.5 weeks. Disappointment if two losses are at home but they're entirely possible

It’s been a problem for 3 years. In non-conference I chalked it up to our style of play and refs/other teams not used to it. But it’s a problem on conference again.

Objectively, the way we play D is suspect us to have more fouls than the other team in a lot of cases. But it’s getting ridiculous.

The problem with this team is that they can still go on long scoreless stretches. Would anyone be surprised if TT came in to Hilton and beat them Tuesday? I wouldn't.
Yes. TT is down multiple players, including 2 starters. Oddly reminiscent of the game they played in Ames a year ago. We had to grind that one out a bit, but even if we have to do it again tomorrow night, it should be a win.

Should be, I agree. But we cannot go on a long scoreless stretch like we did against OU. That would be a loss, because you know Obanor is going to hit a bunch of shots.

It looks that way with Kalscheur. If he can have off nights 1 our of every 4 or so games instead of have 4 off nights then going absolutely bananas it will be huge to our conference prospects.

What I liked against TCU is that he was actively looked for 2 point shots (and being successful) despite struggling from 3. There were times last year where he would settle for 3s, struggle, and completely take himself out of the game offensively. If he can consistently remember there are scoring opps inside the arc and to not abandon trying when he's struggling from outside, that alone will be a huge step forward.

Us going on a long scoreless streak is TT's only prayer of staying within 10. O'Banor may get his, but I'm not sure anyone else is beating us.

I mean, even shorthanded they still went to OT with Oklahoma on Saturday. They're more than capable of putting up a fight. If we have a down game it could easily be an L. Hope not of course.
Again, somewhat shocked. I saw the team that played Iowa, and that team would lose to 50% of the teams in the Country at home. However, the way they are playing right now, being at home, and with the students back, they should win.

I think the key to surviving that is controlling transition opportunities.

Everyone would agree teams can't consistently go 9-10 minutes without scoring and win, let alone win on the road. But 5 minutes droughts WILL happen. It's inevitable. But if you take good shots and abstain from turnovers, you keep the other team in their half court offense, a situation where we can still thrive. But if we start chucking up bad shots or turnovers, that lead to fast break opportunities, you can bury yourself quickly (especially on the road). We saw that a lot against Uconn where the poor shot selection and terrible rebounding led to us chasing them the entire game.

Iowa is such a weird team. They are usually somewhat predictable, but that hasn't really been true this year. Best player goes down, they beat us soundly. Best player comes back and they get destroyed by Nebraska. Somewhere in between they play a ranked Wisconsin team down to the wire, but then lose to a Kenpom 300+ opponent at home. A couple weeks later they lose a starter and rattle off back to back Big 10 wins against a ranked team at home and a team receiving votes on the road. Truly bizarre team this year, and almost like you get a different team every game. Whatever your gut is telling you, bet against it with them.

My gut is telling me **** Iowa. So bet against that?

Don't think students are back for this one
