As requested, here is some info for the ISU - Texas game this weekend. Happy Thanksgiving!

Down and Distance Comparison

On the offensive side, we are mashing yards on 1st down passes at 9.3 yards per play. The 6.0 yards per rush are also fantastic. Our run/pass ratio will probably never be to my liking this year on 1st and 10s, but when we're handing the ball to Breece Hall it's not anything I'll complaint TOO much about. The only notable struggle on our end is 2nd and long passing (only 5.2 yards per play).

When we're on defense, it's interesting to note that Texas just kind of sucks on 1st downs. They excel in 3rd and longs averaging 6.6 per pass and 7.1 per rush (albeit in small sample on the running). Is this just good luck on their end or is there something there that could develop itself into more success on 1st and 2nd downs?

1st Down

Our 1st down play-calling in the first half is basically 45% pass / 55% rush. In the second half we really tend to lean into the run game at a 67% clip relative to passing. Our yards per play on 1st downs is off the charts (not literally, mind you) in 3rd quarters at 13 yards per pass and 7 yards per rush.

Texas has a more balanced approach in 1st halves, but I should caution I don't have the last 2 minutes of halves pulled out of here so it's possible they've just ran a few more 2-minute drills than us in the 2nd quarter.

As noted above, Texas sucks on 1st down. We're getting more yards per rush than they get per pass on 1st down.

Running backs

Breece Hall is tremendous.

Texas has 3 running backs with 51, 52 and 53 carries and between 221 and 294 yards. So I just lumped them all together here.

Honestly, the run distribution is pretty similar between Breece and the Texas RBs. The difference to identify is the quantity of 7-15 yard games and a few more BIG runs by Hall (we all know this, I'm preaching to the choir).

I would note that all of their 3 rushing touchdowns came from the 2 yard line. So, that's some trivia.

Please tell me all this data guarantees a Cyclone win. I really need something to help me hang in there until I get my vaccine.

Receivers

Joshua Moore is the biggest threat and most common target (with Eagles) on 1st downs for Ehlinger. Moore got injured two weeks ago against WVU but is expected to play.

For Iowa State, well, Xavier Hutchinson took off recently. He and Kolar have the lion's share of targets on 1st downs.

Brock Purdy to Chase Allen on 1st down is hilarious. 6 for 6 and 121 yards. Yes, please, more of that.

Finally for receivers is a graph showing yards per target (length of bar), completion percentage to each receiver (color of bar and label), and volume of targets (width of bar). This encompasses all plays, not just 1st and 10 like the above.

Hutchinson is looking dang good. He's getting a large share of targets and still managing almost 9 yards per target. Kolar's at less than 7 yards per target, impacted mainly by Purdy going only 9-16 for 4.3 yards per attempt when targeting Kolar on 3rd downs. I don't have the data on hand but it feels like those 3rd downs were much more consistent for Kolar last year.

Quarterbacks

Outside of 2nd and long situations, Purdy's numbers are superior to Ehlinger's in every down and distance situation.

Given the two QBs' running abilities, it's only fair to provide them the same treatment received by the running backs. Not too much of note here. Ehlinger runs more than Purdy, but not any better. Perhaps even worse, especially considering the propensity for negative plays.

This is all great stuff, @PSYclone22!

Any way of breaking down usage among their three running backs individually? Do they have a preferred back in short yardage situations? Who is seeing the most reps on first down? How is the split of touches once they get into the red zone?

The Texas RBs have a pretty similar 1st down distribution. On 2nd and short they favor Ingram and Johnson over Robinson, while Robinson is on for more 2nd a long runs.

Somehow their running backs only have ONE carry for the entire season on 3rd and 5 or less. Someone tell Heacock for me.

hey pope why r u likin hot instagram model's pics?

Well my son, beauty comes in various forms. While things don't get much more beautiful than a 75 yard Breece Hall touchdown run, the female form is beautiful as well.

Here's the areas of the field for the running backs for you, @JHUNSY

Robinson seems to get the carries at the beginning of Texas drives, whereas Ingram and Johnson get a more balanced mix.
