***Iowa Pregame Thread***

I love this quote on their QB:

“It wasn't the way he wanted to play,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “… But he's going to be fine. He's going to be fine. He's totally qualified, and he can play quarterback. Just got to relax and play and just let the game come to him a little bit instead of trying to force things or get all jazzed up.”

lol that’s a great sign after game 1!

Which means “we are in trouble.”

So…Iowa doesn’t have any pressure because they know they are a bad team and losing this game won’t be a big deal? That’s Fran level apathy setting in already. It’s going to be a long season for them. Then, they’re going to find out that their badass new basketball coach is a fraud too.

Guessing you’re going to see a lot less Hawkeye gear around town over the next year. That bandwagon fanbase will suddenly not care about sports at all. And if you ask them, they’ve never really cared for college sports, they’re more of a pro sports fan.
It's utter BS for anyone to say that the pressure is all on Iowa State. How many of the Hawkeye talking heads predicted Iowa to go to the playoff this year?
Is there a lot of pressure on ISU? Absolutely. But Iowa has a ton as well. Claiming that they don't is pure copium.

The whole idea that a subpar performance from your big dollar quarterback in week 1, equates to a calm, low stress week 2 against your rival, is some of the stupidest logic I can think of. Those guys can play make believe all they want, but there's no way to spin it. There is plenty of pressure on both teams.

Pressure is equal across the board. Iowa has to win this game to have a shot at the CFP. Lose this game and Iowa will have to make the Big 10 Championship. Iowa also obviously doesn’t want to drop two games to us in a row.

Iowa State has pressure too. Haven’t won this game in Ames since 2011 and have choked a couple times during that run. We’re the ranked team and favored.

The ceiling for them is six wins, seven tops. Can easily see them at 5 wins. What happens to the fan base then? College realignment hit Iowa fans in the gut. Iowa wasn’t ready for NIL and they were really not ready for realignment.
They will turn on Free Rents in a New York minute, thinking the game has passed him by, he got his win and its time for hm to retire. Amazing that they do not know their own head coach, he will put his foot down to any talk of retiring, and EIU cannot afford to pony up the cash to buyout his contract. He is going to bury the program before he is forced out. Which will be great to watch.

no way they can pay his buyout.

Looks like he would be owed $6 million per year for each season the contract runs. The contract runs through 2029, so roughly $24 million to buy him out. The donor base still loves the guy, no way the university has that kind of money setting around, so it not happening for at least 2028.

Wednesday Morning Pop Quiz!

Choose one of the following:

Coach A: Our QB is a psychopath
Coach B: Our QB gets jazzed up and forces things

“Not putting stuff on tape” has to be the dumbest excuse for playing poorly and the most overrated coaching tactic out there. Like any opposing coach doesn’t know what Iowa is going to do…
CW should ask McCarney or Rhoads this next time he interviews one of them. I'm curious if it's actually a real thing, or if fans just think it is. I'd lean towards it not being a real thing. I think teams are more "vanilla" week one due to coaches being cautious and not having confidence in their new guys yet, so they want to keep it simple.

I would guess a little of both, teams are running their basic offense as much as they can to get that down, and any gadget plays they have also put in, they are going to save them until they need them. Teams early in the season are still in the dark of what their opponent is going to be running without having a lot of film, so they are basing it on what they have run the year before.

I think that was one of the reason we struggled on offense along with the weather vs KSU. They had been running a 3 man front for years, and then came out in a four man front which we struggled blocking for a half. Changes were made at half, and that along with better weather fixed the problem. KSU running a 4 man front will help us against EIU as that is also their base defense.
