Show choir wouldn't have been effected at all. Both our daughters were in show choir and they go by size of the student body. Has nothing to do with athletic conference. Go to any show choir event around DSM and you'll see Urbandale competing directly against schools like Indianola and Norwalk as well as schools like Valley and Waukee. They're all lumped together.

I think the student vote was a little over 100 in favor of staying vs. a little over 90 in favor of leaving. Pretty much a wash IMO.

Parents were overwhelmingly in favor of leaving CIML. Current coaches were in favor of staying. Seems pretty clear who the Board wanted to please.
I think the board member was trying to say that they can be competitive in sports, and used show choir as an example that it can be done.

Ah, got it.

Yeah it would depend on how they define "competitive" I guess. Constantly going for 2nd or 3rd? Sure. More often than not, they ain't beating Linn-Mar, Waukee, etc. Plus show choir is very subjective based on the scoring of judges, not like sports.

I haven't seen this discussed on here yet but this seems like the appropriate thread. Looks like the legislature is drafting up a bill to allow 8th graders to participate in high school sports like they allow for baseball/softball now. I've got mixed feelings about this. On one hand maybe that helps solve the problem some schools are having of cancelling seasons due to low participation numbers. On the other hand I could totally see those bottom 2-3 weight classes in wrestling turn into the battle of the middle school all-stars. I would hope this gets limited to the smaller schools but I doubt it does if it passes.

Yeah but if teams are having a hard time filling those weights isn't that a good thing that they would have somebody there? Nothing sucks more than going to a high school dual to have 6 forfeits because they don't have kids to fill those spots.

I don't have a problem with a 1A school for wrestling using 8th graders in the weight classes, I do think if you're 3A and can't fill it that's a different story all together.

I guess I don't see how having as many weight classes filled regardless of class size is a bad thing.

Each to their own and I might be the odd one thinking the way I do...my wife has told me that plenty of times.

Not exactly sure.
I know with wrestling, 10 years ago or so when my son was 7th and 8th grade, he would face 8th graders from Ohio, North Carolina and such that wrestled HS level as 8th graders at national duals. They were at a different speed. I know south Dakota you can go at 7th grade, MN 8th grade. Ohio at the time was 8th graders could wrestle JV but not varsity.

Also, how many juniors or seniors do you see wrestling the bottom couple weights? Not many. So it would be no different than that 9th grader wrestling a senior at 150.

Basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, I don't see big issues. Football.......JV maybe but Varsity football I'm not in favor. With my kid playing for a small school, I saw them go against too many freshmen who were not ready for Varsity and don't want them throwing an 8th grader out there.

Heard that Van Meter is getting an invite to the Raccoon River conference
That’d be a big jump for them as they are are 225 BEDS and most schools are about double that. If little hawkeye folds i see newton, pella and maybe Pella Christian applying to Racoon River. Des Moines Christian needs a new home too.

DMC is asking to join the Raccoon but I’m not sure they will be accepted.

They have previously asked and been denied too. The conference doesnt want them as they do recruit players. Carlisle and Bondurant both just played them in substate and got an up close look at them. Not happening. They should try Little Hawkeye.

Im pretty well connected to things RCC and hadnt heard the Van Meter rumor. Guessing there isnt much to that.
