Just looking at the roster, Perkins was pretty good on FGs and PATs in HS. They also have a Punter from Iowa Western (DuPont), but it looks like he didn't kick there or in HS. At least Perkins has a backup I guess. If Jace Gilbert is really out for the season and Konrardy is out for 5 weeks, we are going to struggle some in the kick game. I think that Smith can hit XPs and short FGs. But, we absolutely cannot be letting teams start on the 40 every time we kick off.

He's had 2 weeks of practice of being "the guy". I'm sure they've sent gunners at him repeatedly. He's also had 2 weeks to get comfy with the holder and vice versa. Gets to break the ice at friendly confines before going on the road. If there was ever "good timing" for this to happen, it was now.

Do kickers actually get reps? I thought they just go off somewhere and kick

In watching him warm up he was mainly taking 37 yarders(ball snapped from the 20) and looked reasonably capable from that distance. I would guess that’s the plan, we'll try a field goal in the redzone and between the 20 and 40 we’re in four down territory.
I thought he did a really good job. Obviously, we're not going to be trying long FGs, but at least you know he's going to make his XPs and can be decent on short FGs. Makes decision-making easy when you know what you have. Kickoffs were probably a little short, but we did OK with that.
