I'm a disgusting cyclone.

I've been a die-hard Cyclone since my 7th-grade science fair at Hilton—talk about destiny. After four glorious years in Ames, I found myself ridiculously attached. You’d think they’d made the sidewalks under the campanile with glue!

Yet, life pulls you in unexpected directions, so here I am in Coralville since 2019, deep in enemy territory. I’m on a mission to raise my kids to bleed cardinal & gold, but it’s an uphill battle against a sea of Herkys everywhere.

And now, for my latest act of treason: I'm applying to an online grad program at Kansas State. Yes, that's right—our Farmaggedon rival the purple kitties. Just typing that out makes my stomach churn like I've swallowed a corn dog sideways at the state fair.

So, fellow Cyclones, please hurl your best insults my way. I need them to keep my head straight every time see KSU addresses in my emails.

Please turn in your ISU fan-card at the nearest CF drop box. Forever hold your head in shame.

You have failed at life, shame on you.

In all seriousness though, congrats on setting your sights on grad school. I ran out of my last college classroom for my BA as fast as possible with no intention of ever setting foot in another classroom again, so you have my respect there.

As for the kids growing up Hawk, it makes me pause and realize that nothing is automatic in life. I have two young sons now, one is 3 and one is 5 months, and have always kind of assumed my passion for ISU athletics would just become recognized by them over time and my fervor would be contagious to them. I did after all inherited my Cyclone fandom from my Dad.

But we also are on the wrong side of the state, albeit not right in the enemies back yard like you are. I don't want my boys to grow up to become hoks, but if they wanted to enter the medical field I would be hard pressed to not allow them to attend the U of Iowa. If that ever were to happen at least they would hopefully still be ISU t-shirt fans.

Just remember: corn > wheat. It always has been; it always will be

I've been in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area for 10 years after spending my entire life in central Iowa. You never get fully used to the black and gold everywhere here, but there are quite a few Cyclones like us. I'm raising my son right though. Anytime we're in Iowa City and happen to drive by the stadium, he immediately starts booing.

I have no comment on the purple kitty treason though. That's on you!

@CoachHines3 mom wants nothing to do with you.

Good on you. I did my MA by correspondance (before there was Internet, you submitted your stuff by pony express instead of Dropbox).

Just curious as to what KSU is offering online that ISU is not.

That is a very difficult thing to do. My three kids ended up in medical fields and all attended UHok. I am a total failure as a dad.
My oldest is off to Iowa in a month, planning on med school. Had a couple good offers from KU and tOSU, but Iowa's offer was too good to turn down.

No insults here. I married a crazy cat lady. If only she could mop the kitchen floor as good as Jerome.

Lots of people say Ames and Manhattan are the same, which may be true on paper. But in my experience they are pretty weird over there.

Usually perfectly polite and tolerable in a surface kind of way. But definitely a little off and oddly full of themelves when it comes down to it. Lots of people say they are our sister school. I think its more like they're our weird cousin school raised by that Aunt you don't like. Same grandparents, different rules that suck.

They also have SOME Nebby and Iowa in them. They don't even bother to learn our players names. Like the attitude you get at a small town country club that hasnt been renovated since the Carter administration or a judgmental church group busy-body who gets a little too excited to volunteer at a youth group adolescent lock-in. They don't realize no one really cares that they're there and they're completely replaceable. Which is fine, so are we. But at least we get that.
Well stated. I have gotten this comparison many times on this board. Other than having 13% of our students in AG, you can't have two more different cultures.

I’ve already installed cameras in your apartment. Know you are being watched at all times.

Feel free to clean my floors though.

It all depends on how they respond to the insults coming their way when they wear the good colors. I grew up going to both places for FB games. However, I will never forget being told to **** off when I was about 11 years old while I was sporting the cardinal and gold. It was wierd at the time. Here is the funny and non-surprising fact - the dude that said that to me was a 15 year old school drop out. True story.

Both my parents went to SUI, as they called it. Father in engineering (after service in WWII) and mother in nursing. They were both from rural IC so it made sense and neither had issues with me going to ISU.

I did have a great answer when some local yokel Hok fan found out the situation.

Them (with incredulity in their voice): "How could you go to Iowa State when your parents both went to Iowa!?"

Me: "Most parents want better for their kids than what they had."

"Just lucky, I guess."

Never fear, OP, I live in Coralville and raised 5 kids here who all got degrees at ISU and bleed cardinal and gold. You just have to raise them right. In fact, I even get my paycheck from EIU and take no small pleasure in taking their money and giving some of it to We Will.

If only you could get them to do an employer match.
