Handgun Permit.

Ok, so a week for conceal carry is a week, but the permit to buy they just hand it to you the day you go in? Is there still 7 day wait on hand guns from the store?

They still do a background check so it will take a week also. You just don't need to pass the course that you would with a conceal and carry. Depends where you are. In southern Iowa it's a small town cop shop so they take a little longer. Big city they might process it quicker

If I have a CCP, can I have a loaded un cased rifle in my truck? Just out of curiousity.....seems by the time I get out, load my gun, the critter I was about to shoot has eluded me. Im talking coyotes, not deer/pheasant etc.
Yes, if you have a CCP, you can carry that rifle, loaded, the same places you can take your concealed carry pistol. Iowa is an open carry state, so technically, you don't even have to conceal your pistol.

It can be loaded next to you if you have your permit to carry. Now if someone with you doesn't have one I believe then you have to unload it and case it. Not 100% on that

I used to have a permit to acquire but then a few years back I got the CCP. The CCP is cheaper and doesn't expire as quickly as the acquire did IIRC.
Polk County's CCP is a plastic card that is like a watered down drivers license.

As far as I know, if you have a permit to carry in Iowa, yes. You can have a loaded handgun/shotgun/rifle in a vehicle or not. Just obviously not in a government building/school/bank & a few other places.

Probably depends on the county, but in Polk it's $11 & maybe a week to get a permit to acquire, which is good for 1 year. It's $55 + the cost of a class & 3-4 weeks to get the permit to carry, which is good for 5 years.

After reading all these posts, I'm thankful I live in Wisconsin. I feel for you Iowans though, all that extra time and money you have to spend. In Wisconsin, you can walk in and walk out of a store if you know what you want, given the people doing background checks aren't busy. No permit needed. 2 day waiting period is no longer.

For Concealed Carry, all you need is to take a 4 hour class and mail in your application with your class completion certificate, and you'll have your CCW license in less than a week. Plus, WI an IA honor each other's licenses.

Yup it does vary by county then. My acquire was Story, then I got CCP in Story (and it was cheaper by year then), I moved to Polk and tried to transfer my CCP. They didn't re issue based upon Story's CCP, I had to bring in my original NRA class certificate. No biggie.

But even if he got a handgun purchase permit can he buy a gun for his father?

I'm not familiar with the laws in Iowa but I have my purchase permit in Nebraska and I still have to fill out the forms when I purchase. If his father already has a permit wouldn't it be easier to just take him down to the store, let him pick out what he wants and then you pay for it?

You def have to have a permit to purchase from a dealer. You dont need one to purchase from someone else. So have someone with a permit buy it, then buy it from them. :)

I'm pretty sure if you have your military honorable discharge papers, they'll issue a carry permit without a safety class requirement. That said, the class is still a good idea.

This is sad but true.

However outside of immediate family, I would never sell to anyone that didn't have a permit to buy/carry.

Agree. I took a class with a Story County (maybe volunteer) Deputy at his acreage by Madrid. Knowledgeable, safe, and was a good teacher overall. He didn't act like he was in it to make a buck, he acted like a professional.

You have to have the permit for hand guns only. If you get a long gun you can walk into the store do the paperwork and walk out 15 mins later with a gun.

You can't purchase a handgun for someone else. It's illegal. Your Dad has to be there in person to do the exchange.

It may look suspicious if you try to purchase the gun and have the shop hold it for someone else. It will also look bad if you both go and pick out a gun and use his permit but then you pay for it. Either one of those things are red flags to the shop owner and they may not sell you the gun. Depends if the shop owner wants to risk his livelihood on 1 sale. I would do a gift certificate to be on the safe side. That way too he can pick out what he wants.

No. He needs to legally transfer the firearm to his father. Really the best way to do that is through a FFL. Otherwise you'll be legally liable for anything that gun does. I think technically you are allowed to sell, provided the buyer has his PTA or CCP, but you need to maintain the paperwork of the transfer. In our CCP class, they recommended keeping that paperwork in your gun safe for eternity.

I'd either do the gift cert, or just go to the shop with your dad and pay for it yourself.

Minnesota does not recognize Iowa carry permits so don't pack when you drive north.

And don't accidental discharge your handgun in Target and than flee the scene like the dude this weekend in Fridley. Frowned on here. Probably no biggie at Walmart but Target shoppers no likey.

Also just an FYI, there's no such thing as a 'concealed carry permit' in Iowa. Since you can carry open or concealed, it is simply a 'permit to carry'. That takes a class by an authorized instructor, about $55, & around 4 weeks to receive after applying.

There is also many online courses you can take. For Dallas County Iowa, you can take an online course in the am, print of your certificate, apply online and send in your certificate and get your "Permit to carry" permit the same day if all checks out at the sheriff's office. I know not all counties work like that but Dallas done.

A good reminder to take a Utah qualifying class
