Some of us Cyclone fans like to b*tch about our generic/horrific logos and inconsistent color schemes. From tertiary blue blender bird to our beveled block I-STATE. Which got me to thinking about your drum and feather. Don't you dare drop it. It's a great logo and much better than this generic crap:

"Utah Utes" is simply a tribal name along the lines of Seminoles or Illini and not nearly as provocative as "Redskins." Side note: some natives would like to see that franchise restored to its original namesake anyways:

Some would cite "cultural appropriation" or disrespect. Modern society acknowledges the unfair treatment of Native Americans in our history. At the same time, many of us would like to see their legacies and traditions survive. Having a sports team named after your tribe should be considered an honor. My two cents.
I guess I should have known that Joe Smith didn't make it to Utah. I assume Brigham Young did not have a low tolerance for sodium.

The University of North Dakota was forced to change from the "Fighting Sioux" by the NCAA unless it was agreed to by the two major Sioux Tribes in North Dakota.
One tribe voted to support the continued use of the name by a margin of about 2-1.
The chairman of the other tribe never allowed a referendum among the general tribal population so that tribe rejected the continued use of the name. This was simply because the chairman of the tribe preferred that it be changed. Informal polling suggested the opinion of the general tribal population was similar to the first tribal population. When the chairman ran for re-election, he was defeated by a margin of about 2-1. The primary topic of debate was whether the chairman should have allowed the tribe to vote on the UND mascot issue.
I can understand a tribe not wanting to be confused with the idea that all they want to do is fight. I get it. But- many fights are noble. Like fighting for equal opportunity, representation, or your right to party. I can also understand not wanting to be labeled with names like "Warriors" or "Savages." Or being incorrectly named as Indians for 500 years. I feel that names like "Chiefs" and "Braves" are positive representations however, and should be kept. A chief is a leader and bravery is an honorable quality.

IMHO, Indian mascots is (was) one of the the most visible (and often only) ways Native People stayed in the public consciousness, and sometimes downstream of that came a moment for reflection and educating oneself or others about the historical injustices and present day plight and suffering that occurs every day in relative obscurity in isolated forgotten pockets all over North America, like on my own Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
I can see why using people as mascots made many feel cringey and insensitive, but that's nothing compared to the cringe and outright racism that is inseparable from our history as a nation with respect to the mistreatment of Indian people and the mismanagement of the aftermath. It tends to be ignored or swept under the rug whenever possible, which I feel is one unintended consequence of the mascot name changes.
Native Americans are just not talked about... at least not often, if ever. I know that living in Iowa (my mom was adopted out against her birth parent's will, for example, but she lives back on the Reservation now, and I visit fairly regularly) you can go weeks or more without hearing so much as a mention of the existence of Native People, let alone any related issues. And the visibility of Indian mascots, as silly and insignificant as it seems, was replaced with nothing.

I've always wondered what would happen if Baylor, SMU, BYU and Notre Dame were in the Final Four...
Well, BYU refuses to play on Sunday (I think the others will play on Sunday?), so we'd have to summarily toss them by default and add the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens in their stead.
To my knowledge, BYU is the only school that requires that dispensation...which is why I did not want them in the conference. One set of religious rules shouldn't impact a secular conference, IMO.
Now that I've finished reading through the thread I add my welcome, as a lapsed Coug from the Pac8. Yes...it was the Pac8 when I was at WAZZU, and I always thought that Pac10 & Pac12 were misnomers, as Arizona, Colorado and Utah are clearly NOT Pacific States. 
I feel for the Pac4 - through no fault of their own they were left adrift, something that nearly happened to ISU twice in recent memory. I'm grateful that not only were the Cyclones NOT in jeopardy this time around, they were actually part of the position of strength. I do regret that we will no longer have 1&1 with KU in BB & WBB, or a complete conference round-robin in football, but you take the bad with the good, I suppose.
And by "lapsed", I refer to the fact that I consider myself a Cyclone. When the two teams met in a bowl game a few years back, my sons (who were both born in Pullman) asked if I had divided loyalties for that game. My response was that I only spent a few years at WAZZU; I spent 33 years at ISU, retiring from there in 2017. I am far more Cyclone than I ever was a Coug.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get approved on Cougar board. I've made 2 posts there a wk apart and I'm still put on hold after every post, plus their formatting is painful.
