Has anyone ever converted a wood burning fireplace with a gas insert? Any places you would recommend looking/buying the gas insert from. Checked out Menards and Home Depot yesterday, and their selection is quite limited. TIA.

with this conversion I would recommend hiring it out if you are not somewhat experienced with this type of thing. The hookups and venting can be very dangerous if done wrong.

My brother works for Hearth and Home Technology and they make products that do what you are looking for. Heatilator is one brand that should have a product.
We've converted 2 wood burning to gas; glad we did. Fagan in Ames (in front of Lowes) did a nice job.
We also had one converted using a place in NW Des Moines, may have been the Fireplace Center? They did a good job, also.
How much do these typically run? It’s something we’ve talked about. We have fireplaces on multiple floors and I’ve thrown around the idea of doing an electric insert on one floor and gas on the other in case of power outages.
I have three electric fireplaces in my house and really like them. They weren’t converted, built them that way with the house. You can get them pretty cheap, around $500. Each of mine has a heater function to blow warm air if desired. Here is a picture of the one I have in my bedroom. The other two I have are a little bigger.
